UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation launches an exciting 2016-2017 Season

A year-long series of Jiu-Jitsu events to kick off with the all-new President’s Cup

  • The inaugurating 2016-17 first Jiu-Jitsu President’s Cup will kick off on August 27th, 2016
  • Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour expands with an additional event in Abu Dhabi, the Capital of Jiu-Jitsu

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, August 17th 2016 the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation announced the 2016-2017 season agenda for Jiu-Jitsu in the UAE that will establish the country’s Jiu-Jitsu scene as a strong competitor in the global arena.

The announcement was made at a press conference held this morning at the Jumeirah Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi and was attended by HE Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Executive Director of School Operations at the Abu Dhabi Education Council; HE Fahad Ali Al Shamsi, the CEO of UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, Secretary General of the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union and Head of the Administration Office of the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation; Yaqoob AlSaadi, Head of Abu Dhabi Sports Channels and Saed Hijazi, Assistant General Manager of Premier Motors; along with a number of Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts and sports media from the country.

Commenting on the sport’s success in the region thus far, HE Abdul Moniem Al Hashemi, the Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu federation previously in a statement said, “I would like to thank His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his continued support to the sport due to which our efforts for the development of Jiu-Jitsu has become a global benchmark with the game currently being extensively played across the emirates. We will continue striving to achieve our end goal of developing a new generation of disciplined Jiu-Jitsu players, who are capable and committed to the service of our great country.”

For his side, HE Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Executive Director of School Operations at the Abu Dhabi Education Council commented, “Jiu-Jitsu has rapidly grown over the past few years in the UAE, with many clubs introducing the game to their offering of sport activities. This development supports our mandate of reaching 100,000 players in the UAE by 2020 through introducing the game to every UAE household and reaffirms the need for more tournaments.”

The 2016-2017 Jiu-Jitsu season will witness a number of additions to the championships and events in the agenda including the introduction of The Jiu-Jitsu President’s Cup, which will be held on August 27th, 2016. It will include three rounds and open exclusively to UAE clubs and UAE national players. The second and third rounds will be held on December 24th 2016 and March 4th 2017 respectively, while the winner will be announced and awarded with the President’s Cup during the third round.

In addition, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu national team will participate in the 5th Asian Beach Games that will be held in Da Nang, Vietnam next September.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour has also been expanded to include five events instead of four with the fifth event taking place in Abu Dhabi, the Capital of Jiu-Jitsu. This will add to the tours’ events in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and London. The tour will have its own world ranking and an increased prize value of over AED 550,000. In addition, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Martyrs Championship which was initiated last year, has also been confirmed as an annual fixture in the agenda of the 2016-2017 season.

HE Al Dhaehri added, “The introduction of The Jiu-Jitsu President’s Cup was undertaken as part of our ongoing efforts to introduce new tournaments in order to provide enthusiasts of the game an additional platform to showcase their sportsmanship while also stimulating competitiveness between clubs, which is essential for the game’s success. As we have previously seen, such tournaments naturally lead to the discovery and development of new and existing talent who can represent the national team on a global stage.”

The UAE’s efforts became the leading force in the promotion of Jiu-Jitsu internationally, as the game continues to earn more recognition with its inclusion at the recent World Beach Games in San Diego, in 2019. This is considered a great achievement for the UAE and an important milestone for the game to enter other global sporting events, including the Olympics.

HE Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri elaborated on the topic of Abu Dhabi’s efforts to develop the game, as the UAE’s capital is now considered the decision making center of the game globally, with the administration office of the International Federation having now transferred to Abu Dhabi.

Additionally, HE emphasized the importance of the impressive Emirati women participation in Jiu-Jitsu by saying, “A large portion of our activities are targeted at Emirati women. We are very proud that Jiu-Jitsu is the only spot in the UAE which has over 15,000 registered female players. This shows the great drive for success in sport that our women possess, and their ability to compete when presented with the opportunity.”

In his role as the Executive Director of School Operations at the Abu Dhabi Education Council, HE Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri said, “Schools have played an important role in the development of Jiu-Jitsu in the Emirates. With the support of our wise leaders, students will continue being encouraged to participate at the amateur and professional levels of the game. This approach of identifying and nurturing talent from a young age has proven to be very successful and we are very proud of the strategic partnership between the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and the Abu Dhabi Education Council which has contributed to a number of achievements for the UAE on a regional and a global level.”

Al Saadi added that since its inception Abu Dhabi SportsChannels have led the industry by covering the biggest sporting events, while employing the highest levels of professionalism, objectivity and the latest broadcasting technologies. These techniques have helped to raise the profile of Jiu-Jitsu both in the UAE and across the Arab world.

Abu Dhabi Sports have designated two channels to broadcast all the major sports events happening worldwide, starting with the “UAE President’s Cup” and “Abu Dhabi Grand Slam” tournaments.

“Viewers can watch the tournaments on Abu Dhabi Sports network channels 2 and 6, in addition to the weekly program ‘Emirates Jiu-Jitsu,’ which kicks off at the beginning ofOctober and will be presented by Tariq Al Hammadi,” AlSaadi added.

“Abu Dhabi Sports have assigned dedicated teamsexperienced in both technical and field support to cover the competition through all of its stages. This appointmentfollowed the comprehensive preparations that were madeover the last few months to ensure the success of thistournament at every level.” Al Saadi said.

Al Saadi confirmed that Abu Dhabi Sports will cover the tournament from 20th August through to October. Information on the tournament will be relayed through live broadcast, analytical TV programs and exclusive interviewswith the players as well as the tournament’s organizers.

In addition, Saed Hijazi Salameh, Assistant General Manager, Jaguar Land Rover Sales, Premier Motors, said, “The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation has done a commendable job in promoting this sport among UAE residents. Commenting on the expansion of the 2016-2017 season, Fahad Ali Al Shamsi, CEO of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Secretary General of the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union said, “The 2016-2017 season will kick off on the 27th of August with The President’s Cup. This will be a very eventful season with a stacked agenda. Today, we are announcing the schedule of the main events, but we will be active throughout the year with many local qualifying tournaments for major events all over the country.”

Al Shamsi concluded, “The new season includes 11 local championships and over 60 championships around the world. In addition, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation has a membership program that currently includes more than 25,000 international members, enjoying exclusive benefits. The members will also have the opportunity to enter a draw and win a Land Rover Discovery Sport 2017, which will be announced in July 2017”.

  • Ajman International Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship will take place on 16 and 17 December, 2016
