tales and trails at the JW Marriott Hotel Dubai in Deira
Dubai, UAE- 8 May, 2017 – Spices have wonderful effects on our senses: they can add an exotic surprise of a new flavour for your taste buds when you try a new cuisine or they can evoke the feeling of home when you smell the irresistible aromas of your favourite family recipe. Whether rare or familiar, all spices share the intriguing history of being traded along the ancient spice routes. Connecting people and cultures, this trade was leading to the exchange of knowledge and changing the culinary world forever. Inspired by these tales, the culinary team at the JW Marriott Hotel Dubai have crafted Ramadan experiences ranging from a gastronomic Iftar journey, to staycation packages including a spice market visit with our Executive Chef, Debrup Mitra, to an exclusive personalised Iftar at the hotel’s Royal Suite for Marriott Rewards members. In the spirit of Ramadan, an Iftar preview event was held for artists from Mawaheb – from beautiful people, an art studio for adults with special needs. The fun-filled event resulted in a unique and colourful painting that is now on display in the hotel and used in all promotional collateral and advertising.
Explore the cuisines of the ancient trade ports along the spice routes from East to West during Iftar. Two price options allow for flexibility and a special kids area keeps the little ones entertained.

Follow us on the spice trail, starting in the East on the remote so-called “Spice Islands” in Indonesia, where nutmeg and cloves originated from. Our seafood selection at Bamboo Lagoon lets you dive into the tangy flavours of South East Asia. The spice journey went on to India and Sri Lanka with cuisines that use an abundance of spices in our authentic selection of curries, biryanis and kebabs. Coming into our own region, spices are used for intense flavours rather than for heat. Sumac adds a lemony taste to our Middle Eastern salads and at the live saaj and manakeesh station, our famous bread-maker “Mama Radie” might share with you her Za’atar recipe – a traditional herb and spice mix. Cold and hot Mezzeh, live shawarma and grill stations as well as Ouzi and Ramadan juices with ingredients that range from Persia to China complete the Arabic culinary discoveries. In Europe, spices were so valuable at times, that workers would sometimes get paid in peppercorn. Today we have these in our kitchen shelves and they flavour our European buffet part with a live pasta station, seafood lasagna and more.
Spices are not only synonymous with flavours, but also with colours and creativity. The partnership with Mawaheb – from beautiful people, brought the concept of “Ramadan along the spice routes” to life on canvas. The artists visited the hotel, learned about spices and cooked together with the chefs before enjoying a preview tasting of the Iftar dishes. Inspired by this event they created a painting for the hotel’s Ramadan campaign.
