A brief history of Dragon Boating:
The Dragon Boat is deeply embedded in China’s ‘Dragon’ culture, originating from the Guangdong province in China. Each boat has an ornately carved dragon’s head at the bow and a tail in the stern, expertly painted to feature dragon’s scales, with the paddles symbolically representing the claws. Dragon Boats first took to the waters to commemorate a famous politician that drowned in the Yangtze River almost 2,500 years ago.
Modern Dragon Boat Sport Racing generally has 18-20 paddlers per standard size Dragon Boat and 8-10 paddlers in the small boat, plus a drummer and a helm (steerer). The races are colourful spectacles, with boats competing against each other over distances from 200 to 2000 metres and above. Teamwork and harmony of purpose are valued attributes of Dragon Boat teams, as well as strength, endurance and skill.
