Winners of Human Resources Development Awards Honoured

His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the 20th edition of the National Career Exhibition on Wednesday at Expo Centre Sharjah. The inauguration was also attended by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and a number of Sheikhs.
His Highness Sheikh Sultan cut the traditional ribbon that marked the official opening of the event, and then toured the exhibition, where he met a number of officials from the participating establishments. They briefed His Highness on the fields of employment, job opportunities and training programs offered by their institutions to Emirati graduates.
The exhibition, which is organized by Expo Centre Sharjah in partnership with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), the Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies (EIBFS) and the Sharjah Government’s Directorate of Human Resources, is considered one of the most important events for Emirati jobseekers.
The exhibition aims to connect graduates with various public and private sector institutions, as well as facilitate their recruitment, training and development.
The exhibition has witnessed a significant increase in the number of participants, with more than 100 governmental and private entities participating, compared to the 80 entities in the previous year.
Banks, ministries, government departments, all wings of the Armed Forces, investment companies, private institutions, insurance companies and others are among the entities that are offering employment opportunities to Emiratis.
The inauguration was also attended by HE Abdullah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the SCCI, HE Dr. Tariq Sultan bin Khadem, Member of the Sharjah Executive Council and Chairman of the Sharjah Government’s Directorate of Human Resources, HE Jamal Al Jasmi, General Manager of EIBFS and Head of HR Development Committee in the Banking and Financial Sector, HE Saif Mohamed Al Midfa, CEO of Expo Centre Sharjah, and a number of heads and directors of federal and local departments and institutions, as well as members of the Board of Directors of Sharjah Chamber and bank executives.
His Highness Sheikh Sultan honoured HE Saqr Ghabash, former Minister of Human Resources and Emiratization, for his support and efforts to strengthen Emirati human resource and boost Emiratization.
His Highness also honoured the UAE Central Bank for supporting Emiratization in the banking sector and presented the award to H.E. Saif Hadaf Al Shamsi, Assistant Governor for Monetary Policy and Banking Supervision, who attended the event on behalf of the Governor.
His Highness also honoured the banks that achieved the highest percentage of Emiratization. His Highness also presented the Human Resources Development (HRD) Awards for the banking and financial sectors and presented the Best Emiratization CEO Award.
The HRD Awards were presented in two categories. The first category comprised banks who hired a total number of 1,000 employees and above. The honour was awarded to Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and was presented to Mr. Khamis Bou Haroun, Deputy Chairman and Acting CEO, as well as Sharjah Islamic Bank, where the Award was presented to HE Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of the Bank.
The second category was presented to banks who hired a total of 500 employees and above, and the category was won by Commercial International Bank (CIB), where the Award was received by Mark Robinson, CEO of the Bank.
Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah, CEO of Sharjah Islamic Bank, won the Best CEO award, while Magda Al Suwaidi, Head of Integration of Retail Banking at First Abu Dhabi Bank, won the Outstanding Woman Award in the Banking and Financial sector.
The awards aim to enhance Emiratization efforts and have been particularly successful since their inception in 1999. They hold a special place in supporting human resource development and Emiratization policies.
Additionally, banks that contributed to the support of Emiratization plans and policies were honoured, which included Emirates NBD, where the Award was presented to Hossam Al Sayed, Director General of Human Resources Department, Dubai Islamic Bank, where the Award was presented to Obaid Al Shamsi, Head of Human Resources and Administration Department, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, where the Award was presented to Ali Darwish, Group Head of Human Resources, National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah, where the Award was presented to Sultan Al Ali, Head of Emiratization and Human Resources Department, and Mashreq Bank, where the Award was presented to Ms. Mariam Al Ali, Head of Emiratization and Government Relations.
His Excellency Jamal Al Jasmi, General Manager of EIBFS and Head of HR Development Committee in the Banking and Financial Sector, expressed his appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Sultan for his support for the committee’s work, as well as his support towards Emiratis and human resource development. Al Jasmi added that this year will have four HR Development awards for the banking, insurance, exchange and finance sectors, which will further increase the space for competition.
Best Emiratization CEO Award
Al Jasmi added that the award of the Best Emiratization CEO, which was introduced in 2007, is aimed at encouraging CEOs to develop effective and ambitious strategies for Emiratization in the banking and financial sector, and appreciation of the role they play in the development of Emiratization and human resources development.
Objectives, conditions and standards
Al Jasmi stated that the Outstanding Woman Award aims at empowering Emirati women working in the banking and financial sector and motivating them to take leadership positions, as well as highlight their role in supporting and developing the banking and financial industry in the UAE.
He pointed out that there are four criteria for the award. It is also stipulated that the candidate should be a UAE national and should have practical experience in the banking and financial sector.
Organization and participation
Al Jasmi stated that the Awards Committee was keen to organize and participate in the Awards Ceremony, and to honour the banking institutions for their efforts in achieving a high percentage of Emirati employment. He also noted that the percentage of Emiratization in the banking sector for the year of 2017 has reached 28%.
Support and Empowerment
HE Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the SCCI, expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Sultan for his sponsorship and patronage of the National Career Exhibition and for his unlimited support of all initiatives aimed at enhancing the future of young Emirati citizens.
Al Owais stated that the National Career Exhibition is one of the national initiatives that helps to serve the UAE Vision 2021 and the UAE Centennial 2071 project by harnessing the potential of Emirati youths and providing best educational outcomes, which help in establishing the best government and building the best economy and the happiest society.
HE Saif Al Midfa, CEO of Sharjah Expo Centre, stated that the high number of participants in the exhibition, which is under the patronage of Their Highnesses the Ruler of Sharjah and the Crown Prince of Sharjah, reflects the keenness of the government and private sectors in achieving the objectives of Emiratization by providing suitable jobs for the citizens of the country from different levels of academic education, in order to attract the best minds and to build a future workforce by investing in their talents and skills.
Graduates of all levels, whether of secondary schools or holders of bachelor’s or master’s degrees, can benefit from the training programs offered by various institutions that guarantee citizens access to educational support and practical training, which can help them grow within institutions and companies in the future.
The UAE Armed Forces is participating in the exhibition by providing a variety of employment opportunities across all areas, such as the Army, Air Force, Air Defence, Navy and Presidential Guard, as they seek to attract talented Emiratis.
The exhibition is open on Thursday exclusively for women from 10 am to 2 pm and is open to nationals from 2 pm until 8 pm and on Friday from 4 pm to 8 pm.
