- The Group is supporting the implementation of local world-class healthcare systems as part of the UAE Vision 2021
Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) represent 30% of deaths in the UAE
UAE, 12 February, 2018:In response to concerning statistics in the UAE surrounding cardiac disease, Zulekha Healthcare Group has performed a number of high-risk cardiac surgeries since establishing its Cardiac Centre of Excellence at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah at the end of last year (2017).These high-risk and complex procedures included treating ischemic heart disease, rheumatic heart disease and adult congenital heart disease. Some of the treatments used in the surgeries were Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR), Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR).
The UAE Vision 2021 outlines its mission to accomplish world class healthcare systems as well as a reduction in the number of lifestyle diseases to ensure a longer and healthier life for its citizens and residents. The Cardiac Centre of Excellence at Zulekha Hospital supports the UAE government in achieving both of these focuses.
Zulekha Hospital is the first private hospital in the Emirate of Sharjah offering valve repair and replacement, repair of septal defects (holes) in the heart and complex treatments such as Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeries (CTVS) and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) to improve blood flow to the heart.
Prof. Dr Mohamed Ahmed Helmy, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and Head of Department – Cardiac surgery, said: “We are proud to be working in support of the UAE Vision 2021 by offering world class cardiac treatments locally. This is especially important when a staggering 30% of deaths in the UAE can directly be attributed to Cardio Vascular Diseases. Since launching the centre, we have successfully treated a number of high-risk patients and vastly improved their quality of life.
“As a group, we are continually striving to provide patients with viable and advanced healthcare options in order to better serve the country’s citizens,” he concluded.
One of the high-risk cases performed at Zulekha Hospital included a patient suffering with hypertension and diabetes. The 56-year old was diagnosed with renal impairment heart failure due to a severely impaired left ventricular function as well as a severe left main coronary artery disease. The patient was identified as morbidly obese with a BMI (body mass index) of 42 which increases the risk for stratification. A Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) was applied for three coronary vessels using the left internal mammary artery and two vein grafts. Even though this was a very high risk case, the surgery was highly successful and the patient was discharged from the hospital the seventh day after surgery.
Another case example saw a patient admitted to the hospital with longstanding valve disease and marked left ventricular dilatation, poor myocardial ejection fraction and severe aortic regurgitation. Aortic valve replacement was completed and the patient could be discharged on the sixth postoperative day.
These high-risk cases require an experienced surgical team and excellent postoperative care. For more information, please visit: http://care.zulekhahospitals.com/cardiology/and call 600524442 for emergencies.
