Srilankan Airlines Flies In Elite Global Triathletes for Colombo Ironman® 70.3® Triathlon

SriLankan Airlines, the national airline of Sri Lanka, is flying in the cream of the world’s toughest athletes, who are gathering to compete in the IRONMAN® 70.3® Triathlon challenge, which will take place in the island paradise’s capital city, Colombo on February 24.

The cream of the world’s triathletes will take up the gauntlet of the waves and terrain posed by exacting but spectacular course set up across Colombo’s spectacular sea frontage in the IRONMAN® 70.3®, which is being held in the Sri Lankan capital for the second straight year.

They will be challenged by a jam-packed field from over 58 countries comprising fellow professionals from triathlon’s top layer, aspiring amateurs and those who looking for stiffer challenges and a chance in the international spotlight. As an added bonus, 40 of the top finishers this year will get a shot at the IRONMAN® 70.3® world championships, which will be held in Nice, France later this year.

SriLankan Airlines, as Official Airline Partner of the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon, have been flying in advance teams and recce parties from all over the world, as the Colombo IRONMAN® 70.3® has gained the reputation of being the most spectacular sports event in Asia.

Apart from the international athletes, their support teams, organizers and families, a stream of triathlon fans are slowly filling up the hotel rooms in the Sri Lankan capital. The island’s booming hospitality sector is expecting a considerable uptick in revenues from this influx as triathlon fans and the athletes are also likely to take in the sights and enjoy some of the island’s spectacular sun, sand, sea and wildlife offerings while they are in Sri Lanka.

The race begins with a single-loop, 1.9km swim starting at the beach adjoining Galle Face Green, followed by a flat and fast 90km bike course and a 21.1 km run course that offers scenic country views and a fantastic finish in front of Galle Face Green.

The top five participating countries in IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo are India with 94 triathletes, Great Britain with 55, Australia with 40, France with 34 and Japan with 24. Some of the other nations that will be represented at the triathlon are USA, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, Russia, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

SriLankan Airlines’ participation as the Official Airline Partner of the event is designed to promote Sri Lankan as a preferred host venue for international sporting events and by positioning Colombo as the destination of choice for iconic sporting events. In addition to attracting top triathletes from around the world, the event generates global media exposure across broadcast media, sports channels and print and online media with 15 billion media impressions annually and the series of events around the world attract over 6 million+ spectators.
