Tim Ballantine of Australia and Ling Er Choo of Singapore emerged top of the heap in the So Sri Lanka IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon, as they won the men’s and women’s titles at the end of a gruelling day of competition in Colombo recently. Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Navy team won the men’s relay event, beating off a spirited challenge from the UAE squad and Team Foundation for Goodness.
Competition was fierce from the outset, as 775 triathletes from 58 different countries were flagged off at 6.15 am in the morning. The challenging route took the triathletes through a 1.9 km swim leg off Colombo’s Galle Face, which was followed by 90 km bike circuit through the historic streets of Colombo Fort and culminating with a half marathon before the finish at Galle Face Green.
Ballantine finished in a time of 4:10:13 ahead of Pierre Lafayeedney of the UK and Mats Allen of the US. Choo, who finished in a time of 4:41:39 saw off the challenges of Kimberley McKinney of Australia and Inge Prasetyo of Indonesia.
