Emirates Environmental Group brings together 40 teams

from the UAE and the MENA region in the 20th Cycle of the Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition

Heriot-Watt University – Dubai takes the Rolling Trophy

Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) organised the 20th cycle of the Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition on the 23rd and 24th of November, in patrenship with Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), in the prestigious Knowledge Park Dubai hosted graciously by the Dubai International Academic City.

For two decades, the competition represented a cross-border inclusive platform to reiterate the role of youth as important actors in sustainable development. In the shadow of the current challenges imposed by Covid-19 pandemic, EEG strived to empower the University students to take a stance in the global environmental debate and share their viewpoints in four different topics depicting several pressing environmental challenges. The competition was organised as a hybrid event to allow students from the UAE and the MENA region to participate physically and through the means of remote visual communication.

Under the theme, “Assert your speech for green outreach,” the teams were given a unique opportunity to introduce new concepts and research that they are currently undertaking. The competition succeeded in capturing the innovation and creativity of youth in topics related to global biodiversity, resource efficiency, the sixth mass extinction and climate action. The event welcomed 40 teams from diverse academic disciplines and universities across the region.

Mrs. Habiba Al Mar’ashi expressed her delight in witnessing the revolutionary performances of the students and added: ‘Through our educational programmes we aim to spark the students’ desire to take action, and to reinforce their voices in bringing the emerging environmental challenges to the forefront of our communities psyche. Now more than ever, our planet needs our collective efforts to step up and lead the change needed for a sustainable future. Despite the current Covid-19 pandemic, EEG committed to its role as a catalyst in environmental literacy by hosting the 20th cycle of one of the most important and reputed programmes in the Arab Region.

She said: “I congratulate the students and academic institutions for their commitment and perseverance to reunite for a better environment. I would also like to extend our utmost appreciation to Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) for their continuous support as our strategic Educational Partners’.

Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) has partnered with EEG as a Strategic Educational Partner to execute the series of the educational programmes for the 5th year in a row. ENOC is committed to work collectively with EEG to promote the significance of achieving environmental sustainability”.

His Excellency Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO, ENOC said: ‘Our continuous collaboration with EEG further underlines our commitment to environmental sustainability and offers a platform to raise awareness towards protecting the environment through educational activities and encouraging the involvement of our young generations. Education makes the best minds work productively and therefore it is imperative that our country’s vision of a sustainable future is inculcated in the minds of the young and aspiring students who are the future of this great nation. We would also like to applaud the Emirates Environmental Group for their continued efforts towards sustainable development goals.”

A distinguished panel of jury consisting of sustainability experts from both public and private sector entities who are within the wide network of EEG were invited to judge the performance of the participating teams on a stringent set of criteria.

EEG is delighted to share that with the wrap up of two successful days, the main purpose of the programme was achieved as students walked out of the competition armed with sound knowledge of contemporary sustainability issues and feeling more responsible and motivated towards making a positive environmental change.
