Al Quoz enriches creativity and art scene with bright creative models
Al Quoz in Dubai embraces creative talents from different cultures and nationalities, who have transformed this area into a hub for culture and art with their achievements, each in their field of specialisation and creativity.
Stemming from its role as a supporter of the creative community in the emirate, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is keen on highlighting the creativity, innovation and distinction among society members. The Authority also seeks to inspire creatives to take practical steps towards the future and record achievements through which they could contribute to enriching the creative scene in emirate.
Youbetterfly… a unique shopping experience
In November 2018, Salem BinGhalaita (Owner) and Ali Khalifeh (Managing Partner) opened Youbetterfly in Al Quoz to sell sports shoes. Reflecting upon these beginnings, they commented: “We wanted to create a unique retail shopping experience that directly connected to the urban culture, which is why we chose a warehouse and turned it into a sneaker store. Our goal was to create a community of our own, so we built a small basketball court and a hall for people hang out in without having to buy any of our products. Today, our warehouse has become a popular destination for people in Dubai.”
They stressed that the boom of creative businesses in Al Quoz allowed them to expand and open another branch at Dar Wasl Shopping Centre as well as a store in Abu Dhabi, noting that the initiative to transform Al Quoz into a creative area will help highlight and enhance their experience. They continued: “Our experience is different and cannot be replicated in a mall. Because of our focus on organic growth, we had a hard time attracting customers at first and had to work hard to establish our name, brand and store as a destination. Through Al Quoz Creative Zone, we expect more momentum and visitors to discover this area.”
They stressed that Expo 2020 will also reflect positively on businesses in the region, as the exhibition and Al Quoz Creative Zone share a creative approach to future ideas.
For the Love of Bread… healthy eating patterns
Inspired by the diversity, innovation and originality that characterises Dubai, Rami Badawi founded ‘For the Love of Bread’ bakery in Al Quoz to offer alternatives to those who prefer a healthier lifestyle constituting bread made using natural yeast. Regarding his choice of Al Quoz as the headquarters of the bakery, Badawi said: “The main advantage of Al Quoz is its easy accessibility from Abu Dhabi and various areas in Dubai as well as its affordable rents.”
Badawi aspires for the bakery to become a preferred brand, offering high-quality bread to the largest possible number of people at reasonable prices, and he sees Al Quoz as a means to achieving this goal. He added: “As Dubai and the UAE look towards building a more sustainable economy, I think more entrepreneurs will be looking to establish their businesses in Al Quoz for the same reasons that motivated us to do so.”
Badawi believes that the Dubai Creative Economy Strategy will contribute to creating a larger customer base for the bakery, whom he hopes would use the bakery’s website in multiple ways, saying: “Currently, regulations in place prevent us from using our production space for retail. We think it would be a great addition to the area if people could come in, see how our bread is made, and enjoy the innovative dishes that can be created with it.”
Creative Economy Platform
The Al Quoz Creative Zone development project aims to transform the district into a platform for the creative economy, a preferred destination in Dubai, and a dynamic space for living, working, entertainment and education. The zone will progress upon what has been accomplished in Al Quoz to date and will add a special splendour and identity to the thriving cultural and creative scene in the emirate. It will also play a vital role in increasing the momentum of the public’s visit to companies working in the regional creative industries, attracting more companies and creative entrepreneurs.
