Sharjah Book Authority promotes Arab and Emirati culture
to Library of Congress

LOC’s facilities, divisions, and research and educational centres
In line with its efforts to promote Arabic and Emirati literature around the world, and support research and knowledge development across communities, a Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) delegation headed by HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman, SBA, recently visited the Library of Congress (LOC), the world’s largest library located in Washington DC, USA.
The visit allowed SBA officials to gain a deeper insight into LOC’s expertise in sourcing, management and archiving of knowledge. As the oldest cultural institution and research hub in the US, the LOC has successfully collected and archived 170 million print materials in 450 languages.
The SBA delegation was received by Carla Hayden, 14th Librarian of Congress, along with other senior LOC officials and departmental heads, who took the visiting delegates on a guided tour of the library. During a series of discussions between the two parties, which aimed at boosting collaboration and exchange between Sharjah and the USA in various areas, the American officials learnt about the key events hosted by SBA to promote Sharjah’s cultural vision, and were introduced to the UAE’s myriad creative offerings.
As the SBA delegation went through LOC’s rare collection of manuscripts and bibliographies, the officials learned about the LOC’s customer interface, which allows users to search and access the library’s unparalleled resource of more than 171 million items including over 40 million cataloged books and other print materials in 470 languages; the largest rare book collection in North America; and the world’s largest collection of legal materials, films, maps, and sheet music.
HE Ahmed Al Ameri took a keen interest in the African and Middle Eastern Division (AMED)’s collection, which comprises 300,000 books in Arabic and other languages. The delegates also visited the Rare Book and Special Collections Division that hosts the world’s first translated copy of the Holy Quran, which dates back to 1765, and was part of former US President Thomas Jefferson’s collection. It is the very first copy that was translated directly from Arabic into English as all previous copies of the Quran were translated from French.
HE Ahmed Al Ameri said: “Sharjah Book Authority seeks to actively promote Emirati culture and literature around the world. We are also keen to explore the expertise of globally leading cultural institutions such as the LOC – a towering historical institution preserving invaluable human history in addition to the oeuvres of genius authors, writers, thinkers and researchers through millions of books and catalogues.”
“Cultural movements grow and prosper via open dialogue and sharing of ideas. This is the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, which takes us around the world on our cross-cultural endeavours. Acquainting ourselves with the invaluable experiences of global cultural institutions is one of the most effective ways to ensure the success of any cultural project, and thus, a key focus area for Sharjah and SBA,” Al Ameri added.
Dr. Carla Hayden lauded SBA’s efforts to enhance the emirate’s cultural presence globally, pointing out that Sharjah is recognised globally as a cultural capital in the Middle East. She emphasised that the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), one of the top three book fairs in the world, adds significant cultural value and impacts human culture in general.
The SBA delegates also met with many American publishers and book distribution agents to discuss the participation of American publishers in SBA’s events such as the forthcoming edition of the SIBF, the eighth edition of the SIBF/ALA Library Conference, as well as the Professional Programme.

“الشارقة للكتاب” تستعرض أبرز ملامح الثقافة العربية والإماراتية في “مكتبة الكونغرس الأمريكية”
ضمن جهودها في التعريف بالكتاب العربي والإماراتي في مختلف بلدان العالم، زار وفد من هيئة الشارقة للكتاب مكتبة الكونغرس –أكبر مكتبة في العالم-، بهدف تعزيز فرص التبادل الثقافي بين الشارقة والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، والاطلاع على تجربة المكتبة في إدارة المصادر المعرفية وأرشفة المخطوطات ومصنفات العلوم التي تضمها، بوصفها أقدم مؤسسة ثقافية في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، ونجحت في جمع وتصنيف نحو 170 مليون مادة بـ450 لغة عالمية.
واستقبل وفد الهيئة الذي ترأسه سعادة أحمد بن ركاض العامري، رئيس هيئة الشارقة للكتاب، الدكتورة كارلا هايدن رئيسة المكتبة، وعدد من المدراء والمسؤولين من مختلف الأقسام والتخصصات، حيث قدم الجانب الأمريكي شروحات خاصة خلال جولة على الأقسام الرئيسية والمهمة في المكتبة، فيما استعرض وفد الهيئة جانباً من أبرز الفعاليات والمعارض التي تنظمها وقدم تعريفاً بأبرز النماذج الثقافية للحراك الإبداعي في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.
وتعرف الوفد على مجموعات نادرة من المراجع والمصنّفات، وناقشوا الأنظمة المكتبية المتبعة للبحث والوصول إلى وثائق خاصة يقدّر عددها بـ171 مليون وثيقة، تضم 40 مليون كتاب على شكل (دليل إرشادي وتوثيقي)، إلى جانب أكبر مجموعة في العالم من المواد القانونية والأفلام والخرائط والنوتات الموسيقية وغيرها.
وتوقف سعادة أحمد بن ركاض العامري والوفد المرافق على أهم المخطوطات الإسلامية والعربية التي يضمها قسم الشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا، إذ يحتوي هذا القسم على نحو 300 ألف كتاب باللغة العربية ولغات أخرى، وزار الوفد القسم الذي يحتضن أول نسخة مترجمة للمصحف في العالم والتي يعود تاريخها للعام 1765، وهي من المقتنيات الخاصة للرئيس الأمريكي السابق توماس جيفرسون، وهي أول نسخة مترجمة من العربية إلى الإنجليزية مباشرةً، إذ أن جميع الترجمات التي نُقلت عن المصحف في السابق كانت مأخوذة عن الفرنسية.
وحول هذه الزيارة، قال سعادة أحمد بن ركاض العامري: “تتبنى هيئة الشارقة للكتاب رؤية راسخة تجاه تعزيز حضور النتاج المعرفي والإبداعي الإماراتي في مختلف بلدان العالم، وفي الوقت نفسه نحرص على الاطلاع على تجارب المؤسسات الثقافية الرائدة عالمياً، ومكتبة الكونغرس أحد أهم الصروح العالمية التي تحتضن بين جدرانها تاريخاً إنسانيّاً لا يقدّر بثمن، ويحفظ على رفوفه منجزات وتجلّيات عباقرة وأدباء ومفكّرين عبر ملايين الكتب والمصنفات المهمة”.
وتابع رئيس الهيئة: “إن الحراك الثقافي يتنامى ويكبر بالتواصل واستثمار المنجز والمراكمة عليه، لهذا نحرص على ترجمة رؤية صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي، عضو المجلس الأعلى، حاكم الشارقة، الذي لطالما آمن بأن بناء جسور التواصل مع مدن وبلدان العالم، والاطلاع على التجارب الرائدة في مؤسساتها الثقافية أحد روافد نجاح أي مشروع ثقافي كبير يحمل أبعاداً إنسانية وعالمية”.
من جانبها أشادت الدكتورة كارلا هايدن بالجهود الكبيرة التي تقودها هيئة الشارقة للكتاب في تعزيز الحضور الثقافي للإمارة، وأشارت إلى حجم حضور الشارقة على المستوى العالمي كأحد أبرز عواصم الثقافة ودعم صناعة المعرفة في الشرق الأوسط، مؤكدة أن القيمة التي يمثلها معرض الشارقة الدولي للكتاب، الذي يعتبر أحد أكبر ثلاث معارض للكتاب في العالم، كبيرة ومهمة وذات أثر على الثقافة الإنسانية بشكل عام.
وخلال زيارته للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، التقى وفد الهيئة بمجموعة كبيرة من الناشرين الأمريكيين ووكلاء التوزيع، حيث جرى مناقشة مشاركة الناشرين الأمريكيين في الدورة المقبلة من معرض الشارقة الدولي للكتاب، والدورة الثامنة من مؤتمر المكتبات الذي يعقد بالتعاون مع جمعية المكتبات الأمريكية، والبرنامج المهني للناشرين وغيرها من الفعاليات.{:}
