A strike for IBF Super World Championships at Expo 2020

DUBAI, 13 November 2021 – With packed bleachers and

rousing cheers, the International Bowling Federation (IBF) Super World Championships kicked off at Expo 2020 Dubai on Friday, 12 November. Opponents slugged it out in exciting cliffhangers, keeping spectators riveted to their seats, as balls were sent rolling down lanes, crashing into the pins.

The championships opened with semi-final and final matches in the men’s and women’s Singles divisions on Friday, 12 November, with James Blomgren of Sweden bagging the gold medal in the men’s, Tomas Kayhko of Finland taking home the silver, and Nicola Pongolini of Italy and Geun Ji of Korea securing the bronze.

In the women’s division, Shayna Ng of Singapore won the gold while Cherry Tan, also of Singapore took the silver, and Sarah Klassen of Canada, bagged the bronze.

Saturday night, 13 November, saw the semi-finals and finals showdown in the men’s and women’s Doubles. The Trios category will ake place on Sunday, 14 November. Team events will be held on Monday, 15 November.

The competitions were held in an open-air, two-lane set-up, where spectators and players enjoyed the now-cooler Dubai evenings.

Competing countries include the UAE, Canada, Singapore, Guatemala, Lithuania, Finland, Korea, USA, Germany and Denmark.

IBF is the international governing body for the sport of Tenpin, Ninepin and Para Bowling, representing five continental zones and 114 member federations. The sports organisation was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1979 as the world governing body for Bowling and by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in 2019 for Para Bowling.

Two other IBF Championships are in progress in Dubai –  the Para Bowling World Championships, for people of determination using wheelchairs, and the Masters World Championships, for seniors aged 65 and above. Events are being held at the Dubai International Bowling Centre (DIBC) at Expo’s Sports, Fitness and Wellbeing Hub from 12 – 15 November.
