DUBAI, 21 November 2021 – The Italy Pavilion will host a number of Olympic and Paralympic medalists from the recent games in Tokyo, to promote sport as the highest expression of Expo 2020’s theme, Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.
The programme will take place on 23 November from 1100 to 1630.
The Tokyo Olympic athletes include Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti who both obtained gold in sailing Nacra 17; Antonella Palmisano who achieved gold in the 20km race walk; Luigi Busà who received gold in karate Kumite; Luigi Samele, Luca Curatoli and Enrico Berrè who all bagged silver in team sabre fencing; and Martina Centofanti, Agnese Duranti, Alessia Maurelli, Daniela Mogurean and Martina Santandrea who all took bronze in rhythmic gymnastics.
The medalists of the Italian Paralympic Team include Enza Petrilli with silver in archery, Veronica Yoko Plebani with silver in the triathlon and Stefano Raimondi with gold in swimming.
Giovanni Malago, President of Italy’s Olympic Committee, CONI, said: “[It is] a showcase of great prestige aimed at celebrating the fantastic [sporting] results obtained in this historic year, and at remembering the importance of the values… promoted through the virtuous example of those who manage to convey our values, a point of reference for new generations and the entire [sporting] community.”
There will be a series of discussions and events throughout the day, including on ‘The Beauty of Sports’ from 1105-1140, ‘Women and Sports’ from 1140-1200, ‘Upcoming Major Sporting Events’ like 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games that will take place in Milano-Cortina from 1200-1230, and ‘The 100th anniversary of Monza and the Made in Italy GP’ from 1230-1300, which will feature Stefano Domenicali, Formula One CEO. The talk by the athletes will take place from 1430-1600.
A screening of the film, ‘Crazy for Football’ directed by Volfango De Biasi, will take place at 1630. At the same time, Expo’s Sports, Fitness and Wellbeing Hub will host a series of youth activities including karate, canoeing, rowing, sailing and cycling.
