Expo Forum highlights Russia’s role in a technology-driven, post-COVID world

DUBAI, 4 December 2021 – Russia will have an increasingly important role to play in the post-COVID world, driven by technological prowess, innovative transport solutions, and the Northern Sea Route that promises a remarkable shift in trade flows between Asia and Europe. This was according to experts taking part in the Russia Forum on ‘Driving the Future’ at Expo 2020 Dubai on Saturday.

Addressing the forum, His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, said: “As we are living in a multipolar world, we will be seeing a lot of movements and changes. A few years from now, there could be a different G7. Russia, China, India, Mexico, Indonesia and Turkey are going to be dominating most of the economies for the next 30 years. So, for us, it’s crucial to ensure that we have strategic bilateral relations with those countries.”

Sultan bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO, DP World, said: “In my opinion, Russia has the best location connecting the West to the East and the Far East. There is no better solution to reducing emissions than the Northern Sea Route. If a ship sails from Tokyo to London, it covers 22,000 km, but if the same ship sails through the Arctic route, it will cover only 12,000 km. Russia also has highly-educated people, especially in high technology.”

Denis Manturov, Russia’s Minister of Industry and Trade, noted several factors that must be taken into account when planning the future of the economy in a post-COVID world, and said Russia was on track to be a key player in the new global economy.

“For example, we have witnessed great changes in the medical sector and the pharmaceutical industry. Vaccines that used to take two-five years can now be readied in eight months. In Russia, the number of COVID-19 doses will reach 300 million by the end of the year. We have also taken necessary measures to reduce carbon emissions, taking advantage of existing technology, and with the active support of the government.”

The final session of the two-day Russia Forum, organised in connection with Russia’s Expo 2020 National Day and held at Dubai Exhibition Centre, Expo 2020 Dubai, was also addressed by Nazim Efendiev, Chief Executive Officer, Management Company METALLOINVEST; Herman Gref, Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the Executive Board, Sberbank; Alexey Likhachev, Director General, State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM; and Alexander Shulgin, Chief Executive Officer, Ozon.
