DUBAI, 8 December 2021 – Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali shared his vision for a sustainable Formula 1 and his thoughts on the sport’s popularity in the Arabian Gulf region during a visit to Expo 2020 Dubai on Wednesday. Domenicali’s visit comes ahead of the 72nd running of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. The final race of the championship, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, takes place from 9-12 December.
Can you explain what you’re doing here today at Expo 2020 Dubai? What have been your highlights so far?
We are in the final week of the Formula 1 season following Sunday’s race in Jeddah. We are now heading to the ‘last dance’ in Abu Dhabi, where Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton will fight for the championship. I’m here because of the many partners we have in this region, which is becoming the centre of the world. All the communities are meeting at Expo 2020 to showcase the future of technology. We’ve had some good meetings, and it’s great to be a part of a platform where people are mapping out the destiny of our world for the future.
Formula 1 has been one of the leading forces in motorsport and the wider car industry in terms of pioneering sustainability – can you explain how it is doing that and what are your aims for the future?
Formula 1 has always been at the cutting edge of technology, at the pinnacle of motorsport, and at the forefront of research for a better future. We believe that, for example with regard to the powertrain, we’re going to be hybrid. We are already hybrid, and we have had the most efficient engine since 2014. Looking ahead, we’re going with sustainable fuels, because we believe that we represent one right answer in the needle that points to a sustainable tomorrow. Formula 1 will play its role with great responsibility, with the support of the industry and all our stakeholders.
Can you take us through some of the main technological advances?
Formula 1 is so relevant that we are across everything, from carbon fibre materials, to simulation technology and 3D printing, to the interactive, between a human interface and the machines. This is why we feel responsible to be involved in positive change.
The Middle East has become a huge draw for Formula 1, with four races in the Gulf now this season – what is it that makes this region so great for F1? And what progress have you seen during your time coming here?
The vision for the Middle East started many years ago in Bahrain, which was really impressive. Now here we are with four races, ready to have an incredible experience in Abu Dhabi very soon, and with the addition of Jeddah as well as Qatar. It’s a great region with many opportunities for younger generations and businesses in the area to share their passion for Formula 1 and for the sport itself.
Every year, Formula 1 reaches more and more new countries – how does it help to bring the world together?
There any many differences in culture, personality, behaviour and habits, but the beauty of our sport is that it helps people perceive those differences in a positive way; it unifies them.
How much are you looking forward to the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi? It looks set to be very exciting with the two leading drivers level on points.
We are really looking forward to Sunday’s race because of this. I think it will be one of the best races in recent years, and there is a lot of focus on it from the media. So, stay tuned and make sure you are connected, because it will be a great show!
F1 is making changes in 2022 to make racing closer. What impact do you expect this to have on next year’s championship?
The change of regulation was supposed to happen this year but due to [COVID-19], it was postponed. It was studied with the objective of allowing the incredible drivers – who are valued and an asset for Formula 1 – to have one car be close behind the other in order for them to maximise their performance. We are already looking forward to seeing the effects of this, starting from the first test that will take place in February.

يُقام السباق الأخير للبطولة، أي سباق جائزة الاتحاد للطيران الكبرى للفورمولا 1 أبوظبي، من اليوم الخميس، 9 ديسمبر، إلى 12 ديسمبر الجاري. وقد أجرت خدمة أخبار إكسبو مقابلة مع دومينيكالي، فيما يلي نصها.
هل يمكنك إخبارنا بما تفعله اليوم هنا في إكسبو 2020 دبي؟ وما أبرز ما رأيته حتى الآن؟
نحن في الأسبوع الأخير من موسم الفورمولا 1 بعد سباق يوم الأحد الذي أُقيم في جدة. نتجه الآن نحو السباق الحاسم في أبوظبي، الذي سيتنافس فيه ماكس فيرستابن ولويس هاميلتون على البطولة. أنا هنا لوجود الكثير من شركائنا في هذه المنطقة، التي باتت مركز العالم. تلتقي جميع المجتمعات في إكسبو 2020 لاستعراض مستقبل التقنية. حضرنا العديد من الاجتماعات الجيدة، ومن الرائع المشاركة في منصة يرسم فيها الناس خارطة مصير عالمنا من أجل المستقبل.
تشكل الفورمولا 1 واحدة من الجهات الرائدة في رياضة المحركات الآلية، وصناعة السيارات بشكل أوسع، على صعيد الاستدامة. هل يمكنك توضيح كيف تحقق الفورمولا 1 ذلك وأهدافكم للمستقبل؟
لطالما احتلت الفورمولا 1 طليعة الابتكار التقني، وصدارة رياضة المحركات الآلية، ومقدمة البحث عن مستقبل أفضل. لدينا قناعة راسخة بأننا، على صعيد مجموعة نقل الحركة على سبيل المثال، نتجه نحو مجموعة نقل الحركة الهجينة. محركاتنا هجينة بالفعل، ولدينا المحرك الأكثر كفاءة منذ العام 2014. وعند التطلع إلى الأمام، نختار أنواع الوقود المستدام، لأننا مقتنعون بأننا نمثل جزءا من الحل ضمن المساعي في سبيل تحقيق مستقبل مستدام. وستؤدي الفورمولا 1 دورها، متحمّلة مسؤولية هائلة، بدعم من الصناعة وجميع جهاتنا المعنية.
هل يمكنك إخبارنا عن بعض الإنجازات التقنية الرئيسة؟
الفورمولا 1 مهمة للغاية، إلى درجة أننا نتعامل مع جميع التقنيات، من مواد الألياف الكربونية، وتقنية المحاكاة، والطباعة الثلاثية الأبعاد، إلى الجانب التفاعلي بين واجهة بشرية والآلات؛ ولذلك نشعر بالمسؤولية تجاه المساهمة في التغيير الإيجابي.
أصبحت منطقة الشرق الأوسط نقطة جذب هائلة للفورمولا 1، إذ أُقيمت أربعة سباقات في منطقة الخليج هذا الموسم. ما الذي يجعل هذه المنطقة رائعة للغاية لإجراء سباقات الفورمولا 1؟ وما التقدم المُحرز الذي شهدته في فترة زيارتك؟
بدأت الرؤية للشرق الأوسط منذ سنوات عدة في البحرين، وهو ما كان رائعا بالفعل. وها نحن الآن أمام أربعة سباقات، وجاهزون لعيش تجربة مدهشة في أبوظبي عما قريب، مع إضافة جدة وقطر أيضا. إنها منطقة رائعة تتيح الكثير من الفرص للأجيال الأكثر شبابا والشركات في المجال من أجل مشاركة شغفها بالفورمولا 1 والرياضة بحد ذاتها.
تصل الفورمولا 1 كل عام إلى المزيد والمزيد من البلدان الجديدة. كيف تساعد على جمع العالم معا؟
كثيرة هي الاختلافات على مستويات الثقافة، والشخصية، والتصرفات، والعادات؛ لكن جمال رياضتنا يكمن في أنها تساعد الناس على إدراك هذه الاختلافات بطريقة إيجابية، إذ توحدهم.
إلى أيّ مدى تتطلع إلى السباق الأخير لهذا الموسم في أبوظبي؟ يبدو أنه سيكون مشوقا للغاية مع حيازة السائقين الأوليْن عدد النقاط نفسه.
نتطلع للغاية إلى سباق يوم الأحد نتيجة ذلك. أظن أن هذا السباق سيكون من السباقات الفضلى في السنوات الأخيرة، وتركز وسائل الإعلام عليه بشدة. لذا ترقبونا وتأكدوا من حضوره، إذ سيكون عرضا رائعا!
تحدث الفورمولا 1 تغييرات في العام 2022 لجعل التسابق أقرب. ما الأثر الذي تتوقع أن يتركه ذلك على بطولة العام المقبل؟
كان من المفترض إحداث هذا التغيير هذا العام، لكنه تأجل بسبب [كوفيد-19]. دُرس التغيير مع هدف السماح للسائقين الرائعين، الذين نقدرهم ونراهم عناصر قيّمة للفورمولا 1، بجعل سيارة السباق تقترب من تلك التي أمامها من أجل تحقيق الحد الأقصى لأدائهم. ونتطلع بالفعل إلى رؤية أثر ذلك، ابتداء بالاختبار الأول الذي سيجري في شهر فبراير.{:}
