DUBAI, 15 December 2021 – Sudanese-American poet Emi Mahmoud held the audience rapt, as she performed ‘People Like Us’ and ‘Mama’ during SDG I Bringing Knowledge and Learning to the World, a one-day event that took place on Wednesday at The Nexus for People and Planet, Expo 2020 Dubai.
Named one of BBC’s 100 Most Inspirational Women, Mahmoud (whose full name is Emtithal Mahmoud) revealed why she uses the art form to tell her story: “I choose poetry to speak because I think it reaches people where they least expect to be reached… If you speak with their humanity, they are compelled to respond to their humanity. And that’s the beauty of having so many people here to actually speak with our humanity and really humanise these issues [of bringing knowledge and learning to the world] because it’s really people, who are affected, and people who are going to solve it.”
She introduced Mama by underlining the scale of mothers’ influence: “One of the key determinants of the life expectancy of a child is the education level of the mother. Can you imagine that? So how well you educate someone can not only affect them, but future generations and it can affect how long you live. That’s not right.”
The blistering tribute to Mahmoud’s mother brought the audience to their feet in a standing ovation.
Mahmoud co-founded an international research initiative and has worked with President Barack Obama, the UNHCR, Kailash Satyarthi, Tawakkol Karman and several other Nobel Laureates, leaders, and organisations. She has also taught poetry workshops around the world.
SDG I Bringing Knowledge and Learning to the World, in association with Dubai Cares and co-curated by Italy Pavilion, took place during Expo 2020 Dubai’s Knowledge & Learning Week, part of event series Programme for People and Planet, which is designed to address the most pressing challenges we face in the world today.
{:}{:ar}دبي، 15 ديسمبر 2021 – وقف الجمهور وصفق لفترة طويلة بعد أن انتهت الشاعرة السودانية إيمي محمود من إلقاء قصيدتين مميزتين باللغة الإنجليزية في قاعة نكزس في إكسبو 2020 دبي اليوم الأربعاء، ضمن فعاليات برنامج الإنسان وكوكب الأرض، بالتعاون مع دبي العطاء وإيطاليا، في أسبوع المعرفة والتعلُّم.
تحدثت الشاعرة الشابة عن أهمية التعليم للفتيات والنساء، وأنها تعلمت الكثير من والدتها وجدتها، اللتين تلقيتا تعليما جيدا في وقت لم تكن تحصل فيه معظم النساء على التعليم الجيد.
أخذت كلمات الشاعرة الشابة وأداؤها الساحر الجمهور ليعيشوا معاناة اللجوء وما تسببه الحروب من حرمان الأطفال من الدراسة، والجوع، وخوف الأهالي على أبنائهم، ومشاهد الدمار، والذكريات الثقيلة بألمها وعتمتها، التي تظل عالقة في عقول الأطفال لسنين حتى يكبروا وتتحول إلى قصص وأشعار تلهم الناس بالعمل على إيقاف الحروب وحل مشاكل اللجوء.
وفي ختام حديثها وأبياتها الشعرية الحزينة والمؤثرة تمنت أيمي من الجميع أن يرجوا الخير والسلام لبلدها السودان ولكل بلاد العالم.{:}
