“Protect Baby Turtles” Program With Emirates Marine Environmental Group
- Pampers believes in protecting every baby, and the planet they grow up in
- Program to protect Arabian Gulf critically endangered baby Hawksbill turtles
Today, Pampers announced that it is investing in the conservation of a globally critically endangered species, baby Hawksbill turtles (hatchlings). Hawksbills are universally beloved creatures and a valuable member of the Arabian Gulf marine ecosystem, protecting this species is of global importance.
In partnership with Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG), the Pampers “Protect Baby Turtles” Program at the P&G Dubai Mangrove Forest will comprehensively enhance nesting habitats and facilitate a safe environment for Hawksbill hatchlings, giving them the best start on their journey to the ocean.
Karim ElFiqi, Pampers Vice President at Procter & Gamble commented, “Pampers aims to give the best start in life to the babies it serves and the endangered babies who share our planet, starting with baby sea turtles. Just like the early years of a baby’s life are important to their development, the first year of a baby Hawksbill turtle’s life is also critical to their survival. We feel we can play an important role in raising awareness for the species, as well as help provide them with a safe nesting environment and one where hatchlings can move freely into the ocean.”
The Hawksbill Turtle’s global population has reduced at an alarming rate. Protected under the Endangered Species Act and listed as “critically endangered”, the nesting population has declined by 80% due mostly to human impact and habitat loss. It is estimated there are currently only around 8,000 nesting turtles annually. Preferring sandy beaches and coastal dunes where nesting sites are within reach, the turtles help maintain the health of marine ecosystems.
Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi, President of EMEG, commented, “We are proud that Dubai is one of the nesting grounds for the Hawksbill. Once they reach maturity at around 20 to 35 years of age, the female will return to coastal beaches of the P&G Mangrove Forest at Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary where they were born, to nest and lay their eggs, thus completing the circle of life. With the support of Pampers, we will be able to ensure we provide them with a protected area to nest where they can safely emerge and return to the sea.”
This initiative aligns with the UAE Environment Vision 2021, ensuring sustainable development while preserving the environment, and is the latest in a series of innovative ecological initiatives Pampers and P&G are putting their weight behind as a Force For Good, in order to accelerate their commitment towards sustainability as well as increase community engagement for the environment.
As part of the Pampers “Protect Baby Turtles” Program, to encourage everyone to play a part, Pampers is also donating 10 AED on every pack sold on FirstCry.ae for the World Ocean Day event (June 8/9/10) to help protect the Hawksbill turtles. In the longer term, the program partnership will extend to turtle satellite tagging, scientific research as well as conservation awareness events.
The P&G Dubai Mangrove Forest is located in the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, a United Nations globally protected reserve that has been included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance and is being managed by Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG).

أعلنت بامبرز اليوم، عن مبادرة خاصة تهدف إلى الاستثمار في الجهود الهادفة للحفاظ على الأنواع المحلية المهددة بالانقراض، وأهمها صغار سلاحف منقار الصقر، وهي من الأحياء المائية التي تشكل جزءاً من النظام البيئي البحري في منطقة الخليج العربي.
وسيتم في إطار برنامج بامبرز “حماية السلاحف الصغيرة” التعاون مع مجموعة الإمارات للبيئة البحرية في غابة القرم التي دشنتها مؤخراً شركة بروكتر آند جامبل في دبي، للعمل على تحسين النظم البيئية البحرية وموائل التعشيش وحماية مناطق التكاثر الآمنة، لضمان رعاية سلاحف منقار الصقر وحمايتها من الأخطار التي قد تتعرض لها.
وقال كريم الفقي نائب رئيس وحدة رعاية الأطفال لدى بروكتر آند جامبل: ” تعمل بامبرز على توفير مستوى أفضل من الحياة للأطفال الذين تقدم لهم خدماتها، ولصغار الكائنات الحية المعرضة للخطر على كوكب الأرض، ومنها صغار السلاحف البحرية. وتعتبر السنة الأولى من حياة السلاحف البحرية ذات أهمية بالغة لضمان استمراريتها في العيش، على نحو يحاكي أهمية السنوات الأولى من حياة الطفل. ونحن على ثقة بأننا سنساهم في لعب دور حيوي لناحية تعزيز الوعي بالمشكلة، فضلاً عن المساعدة في توفير بيئة آمنة للتعشيش ولصغار السلاحف، وضمان تحركها بحرية في على الشاطئ وفي المياه”.
شهد العالم تدهوراً ملحوظاً في أعداد سلاحف منقار الصقر بمعدل ينذر بالخطر، حيث انخفضت أعداد السلاحف القادرة على التعشيش بأكثر من 80٪، بسبب النشاطات البشرية غير المسؤولة واختفاء أجزاء واسعة من الموائل. ويقدر عدد السلاحف، من هذا النوع، والتي تقوم بعملية التعشيش سنوياً، حوالي 8000 سلحفاة حول العالم، وهي محمية بموجب قانون الأنواع المهددة بالانقراض، بالإضافة إلى إدراجها على لائحة الأنواع “المهددة بالانقراض”. وتساعد عمليات التعشيش في المواقعالتي تفضلها السلاحف، كالشواطئ والكثبان الرملية، في الحفاظ على منظومة بيئية صحية.
ومن جهته، قال الرائد علي صقر السويدي، المؤسس والرئيس التنفيذي لمجموعة الإمارات للبيئة البحرية: “تعتبر سواحل دبي، إحدى أهم موائل التعشيش لسلاحف منقار الصقر البحرية، وسيؤدي هذا التعاون إلى تمكين أنثى سلاحف منقار الصقر، من العودة إلى غابة القرم التي أسستها بروكتر آند جامبل في محمية جبل علي للحياة الفطرية. للتعشيش ووضع بيوضها في المنطقة التي ولدت فيها، والمساهمة في استكمال دورة الحياة، وذلك عند بلوغها سن النضج بعد 25 عاماً من ولادتها. وسنتمكن بفضل الدعم الذي تقدمه بامبرز، من تعزيز البيئة البحرية للسلاحف، وتمكينها من وضع بيوضها في مكان آمن، والهجرة بحرية، بالإضافة إلى توفير الغذاء اللازم لهذه الانواع المهددة بالإنقراض”.
وتأتي هذه المبادرة بالتماشي مع رؤية الإمارات 2040 التي تستشرف مستقبلاً شاملاً للتنمية المستدامة في الدولة، وتعتبر الأحدث في سلسلة من المبادرات البيئية المبتكرة التي تطلقها بروكتر آند جامبل كقوة للخير، وتسريع التزامها نحو الاستدامة وتعزيز مشاركة المجتمع في حماية البيئة.
وسيتم في إطار برنامج “حماية صغار السلاحف”، إطلاق مبادرة هادفة لتشجيع الجميع على المساهمة في حماية هذه الأحياء البحرية، حيث أعلنت بامبرز عن تبرعها بمبلغ 10 دراهم إماراتية، عند شراء أي عبوة من منتجاتها عبر FirstCry.ae، بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للمحيطات )8/9/10 يونيو 2021( للمساهمة في حماية سلاحف منقار الصقر البحرية. وستمتد الشراكة على المدى الطويل لتعزيز هذا البرنامج، عبر متابعة السلاحف باستخدام الأقمار الصناعية وتعزيز عمليات البحث العلمي، بالإضافة إلى التوعية بضرورة حماية هذه الأنواع المهددة.
وتقع غابة القرم- بروكتر آند جامبل في دبي، ضمن محمية جبل علي للحياة الفطرية، والتي تعتبر من أهم المساحات البيئية العالمية، وهي معتمدة ضمن شبكة منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة (اليونيسكو)، ومدرجة على قائمة “رامسار” للأراضي الرطبة ذات الأهمية الدولية، وتديرها مجموعة الإمارات للبيئة البحرية (EMEG).
