Dubai-born CAFU puts research at the core of its CAFU Sustainability Deal through new partnership with UAE University to study sustainable planting in arid landscapes
- Pioneering tech and car service company, CAFU signs research partnership MoU with United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) to undertake extensive research into optimising the planting and successful growth of the Ghaf Tree in hostile locations such as the desert conditions found in the UAE.
- This first of its kind research conducted in the UAE is the next phase of the CAFU Ghaf Tree seed planting project which seeks to plant one million seeds in the UAE to tackle climate change.
- The study will contribute to the next stage of the CAFU Ghaf Tree seed project that will build on the existing R&D work already undertaken to help optimize and create a self-sustaining seedball for outdoor survival at peak summer temperatures, as well as increase seed viability germination and water retention.
- The research findings will also advance the knowledge bank in the country around enhancing desert planting across a range of desert plant types to improve habitat survival under hostile environments of heat and minimal water.
The next stage of the CAFU Sustainability Deal is revealed today as Dubai born CAFU announces a new research partnership with United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) to undertake the first of its kind research into optimising the process for successful planting in desert conditions by enhancing seed germination and water retention for the Ghaf Tree and other desert plant types.
The research project was announced by Rashid Al Ghurair, CEO of on-demand car service CAFU at a signing ceremony with Dr. Bhanu Chowdhary, Dean of the College of Food and Agriculture, UAE University, for the partnership MoU that will help scale CAFU’s Ghaf Tree Seed project, as well as explore ways in which plants can grow sustainably in an arid landscape with the use of minimal water and reduced manpower effort.
By placing research at the core of the CAFU Sustainability Deal, which is the strategy for the company to advance towards its goal of becoming carbon neutral, the company is committing to build further on its already extensive R&D in its Ghaf Tree seed initiative. The end goal of the initiative is to plant one million Ghaf Tree seeds in the UAE desert to contribute to local and global efforts to tackle climate change.

Months after announcing the completion of planting over 10,000 seeds in the desert, using their cutting-edge drone technology and in house designed first-of-its-kind planting mechanism, CAFU continues to sow the seed in its mission to planting over one million Ghaf Tree seeds in the UAE desert.
Lead by CAFU’s Sustainability and Community Manager, Nabra Al Busaidi, this research will help optimize and create a self- sustaining seedball for outdoor survival which could lead to long-lasting effects for how we successfully grow trees and plants across the desert.
“As we move forward in the next phase of our journey to plant one million Ghaf Tree seeds in the desert, this research will help to equip us further in our approach to further optimise our planting and increase the successful rate of seed germination. By expanding the scope of the research, we are also exploring other native desert habitat that could benefit from our approach that we are taking to the Ghaf Tree which provides a wonderful opportunity to expand our sustainability work in the future” said Nabra Al Busaidi, Sustainability and Community Manager at CAFU.
CAFU and UAEU also agreed to explore working together on a new strategy to scale these findings to explore working with other UAE native desert plants using same seedball methodology. Both organisations signalled their intent to instigate the research project that would conclude with an in-depth research report published containing their findings and a series of recommendations.
About CAFU’s Sustainability Deal
In November 2020, CAFU unveiled the ‘CAFU Sustainability Deal’, a strategy which was created by the pioneering tech and car service company in their bid to becoming carbon neutral and ultimately combatting climate change. The central pillar of the CAFU Sustainability deal was the planting of one million Ghaf tree seeds in the UAE desert.
CAFU has made a series of advancements in its initiatives towards the CAFU Sustainability Deal. On top of the list was the creation of a new role of Sustainability and Community Manager last year, to drive this strategy. Since then, Nabra Al Busaidi has led the company to a series of accomplishments and projects in addition to the Ghaf Tree Project.
As part of CAFU’s Sustainability Deal and as a UN Global Compact Member, CAFU also announced last year that it aligned itself with UN SDG 13 on Climate Action, as well their involvement in the UAE SDG compact accelerator programme to help them achieve this goal.

- كَفو، الشركة الرائدة في التكنولوجيا وخدمات السيّارة، وقّعت اتفاقية شراكة بحثيّة مع جامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة للقيام بالأبحاث المعمّقة حول زراعة وإنبات بذور أشجار الغاف بنجاح في مواقع مناخية قاسية مثل البيئة الصحراوية في دولة الإمارات.
- هذه الأبحاث هي الأولى من نوعها التي تُجرى في الإمارات العربية المتحدة وتمثّل المرحلة الثانية من مشروع كَفو لزراعة بذور شجر الغاف الهادف إلى زراعة مليون بذرة في دولة الإمارات للمساعدة على مواجهة تغيّر المناخ.
- ستساهم الدراسة في المرحلة التالية من مشروع كَفو لزراعة بذور شجرة الغاف والذي سيعتمد على أعمال البحث والتطوير الحالية التي تمّ تنفيذها بالفعل للمساعدة في تحسين وإنشاء كرة بذرة ذاتية الاستدامة قادرة على الاستمرار في الطبيعة في ذروة درجات الحرارة المرتفعة صيفاً، بالإضافة إلى زيادة قابلية البذور للنمو، والإنبات، واحتباس الماء.
- ستعمل نتائج البحث أيضاً على تعزيز بنك المعرفة في الدولة حول تعزيز زراعة الصحراء عبر مجموعة من أنواع النباتات الصحراوية لتحسين بقاء الموائل في ظلّ بيئات قاسية تتصّف بالحرارة العالية والحدّ الأدنى من المياه.
تمّ الكشف عن المرحلة التالية من تعهّد كَفو للاستدامة اليوم حيث أعلنت كَفو، الشركة الناشئة في دبي، عن شراكة بحثية جديدة مع جامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة لإجراء أول دراسة من نوعها لتحسين الزراعة الناجحة في الظروف الصحراوية من خلال تعزيز إنبات البذور واحتباس الماء لشجرة الغاف وأنواع النباتات الصحراوية الأخرى.
أعلن عن هذا البرنامج البحثي راشد الغرير ، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة خدمات السيارة عند الطلب، كَفو، في حفل توقيع مع الدكتور
أ.د. بهانو شاودري – عميد كلية الأغذية والزراعة بالجامعة
، على مذكّرة التفاهم التي ستساعد في توسيع نطاق برنامج مشروع كَفو لزراعة بذور شجرة الغاف، وكذلك استطلاع الأساليب التي يمكن للنباتات من خلالها النمو بشكل مستدام في منطقة قاحلة باستخدام الحدّ الأدنى من المياه والتقليل من جهود القوى العاملة.
والواقع أن وضع البحث في صميم تعهّد كَفو للاستدامة يمثّل استراتيجية وضعتها الشركة للتقدّم نحو هدفها المتمثل في أن تصبح محايدة للكربون، حيث تلتزم كَفو بالاعتماد بشكل أكبر على عمليات البحث والتطوير الواسعة القائمة حالياً في مبادرة بذور شجرة الغاف. وذلك بهدف الوصول إلى الهدف النهائي للمبادرة وهو زراعة مليون بذرة شجرة غاف في صحراء الإمارات، للمساهمة في الجهود المحلية والعالمية للتصدّي لتغيّر المناخ.
في هذه المناسبة، قال راشد الغرير، مؤسّس كَفو ورئيسها التنفيذي: “يسعدنا أن نعلن عن شراكتنا مع أكثر الجامعات عراقةً في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة في الدراسات الزراعية، وذلك في إطار سعيِنا إلى تطوير أبحاثنا الهادفة إلى تحسين موطننا الصحراوي. وبصفتنا شركة مسؤولة، فإننا نحقّق خطوات كبيرة في سبيل تحوّلنا إلى شركة محايدة للكربون والمساعدة في معالجة تغيّر المناخ الذي يعدّ ذا أهمية قصوى لحماية المستقبل للأجيال القادمة.
“”سيشكّل هذا البحث خطوة إلى الأمام في سعينا لزراعة بذور شجرة الغاف على نطاق واسع عبر تكنولوجيا طائراتنا المسيّرة بدون طيار في ظروف مناخية قاسية، وزيادة صلاحية البذور وتحسين مدّة إنباتها، بالإضافة إلى المساهمة في اقتصاد بلدنا القائم على المعرفة.”
وأضاف: “إن توقيع مذكرة التفاهم هذه هو خطوتنا الأولى لإطلاق العنان لمجموعة غير محدودة من المشاريع البحثية المحتملة بين كَفو وجامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، والتي ستعمل أيضاً على استطلاع إمكانات أنواع نباتية أخرى بينما نتطلّع إلى توسيع نطاق البرنامج في المستقبل”.
من جهته، قال أ.د. بهانو شاودري، عميد كليّة الأغذية والزراعة بجامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة: “بصفتنا جامعة بحثية رائدة، ومؤسسة من شأنها تشكيل العقول الشابة والمشرقة لصانعي التغيير في المستقبل، يسعدنا جداً العمل مع مؤسسة مثل كَفو، الشركة الإقليمية الرائدة التي تضع الاستدامة في صميم كلّ أعمالها. وتعاوننا هذا يعدّ فرصة ممتازة للدمج بين مجموعة متنوّعة من المهارات من فرق متعدّدة في مجال بحثي مثير. علماً أن هذه الدراسة لن تساعد كَفو على دفع جدول أعمالها الخاصة بالاستدامة وحسب، بل ستساعد أيضاً في تعزيز جهود دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة لأن تصبح دولة مستدامة.”
بعد أشهر من الإعلان عن الانتهاء من زراعة أكثر من 10,000 بذرة في الصحراء، باستخدام تقنية الطائرات المسيّرة بدون طيّار المتطوّرة وآلية الزراعة الأولى من نوعها المصممة من قِبل فريقها، تواصل كَفو زراعة البذور ضمن مهمتها الهادفة لزراعة أكثر من مليون بذرة شجرة غاف في صحراء الإمارات.
كما أن هذا البحث الذي تقوده مديرة قسم الاستدامة والمجتمع لدى كَفو، نبرة البوسعيدي، سيساعد على تحسين وإنشاء كرة بذرة ذاتية الاستدامة قادرة على الاستمرار في الطبيعة ويمكن أن تؤدي إلى تحقيق آثار طويلة الأمد لنجاحنا في زراعة الأشجار والنباتات في الصحراء.
وقالت نبرة البوسعيدي، مديرة قسم الاستدامة والمجتمع لدى كَفو: “بينما نمضي قدماً في المرحلة التالية من رحلتنا الهادفة إلى زراعة مليون بذرة من شجرة الغاف في الصحراء، سيساعد هذا التعاون البحثي على تثبيتنا بشكل أفضل على نهجنا لتحسين زراعتنا وزيادة المعدّل الناجح لإنبات البذور. ومن خلال توسيع نطاق البحث، فإننا نستكشف أيضاً موطناً صحراوياً محلياً آخر يمكن أن يستفيد من نهجنا الذي نتبعه مع شجرة الغاف، ما يوفّر فرصة مثالية لتوسيع أعمالنا الخاصة بالاستدامة في المستقبل.”
كما اتّفقت كَفو وجامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة على استطلاع آفاق العمل معاً على استراتيجية جديدة لتوسيع نطاق هذه النتائج وإمكانية التعامل مع نباتات صحراوية محلية أخرى في الإمارات أيضاً باستخدام منهجية كرة البذور. و أشارت المنظّمتان إلى عزمهما على المضي قُدُماً بالمشروع البحثي الذي سينتهي بتقرير معمّق يحتوي على نتائجهما وسلسلة من التوصيات التي سيتمّ نشرها.
حول تعهّد كَفو للاستدامة
في نوفمبر 2020، كشفت كَفو النقاب عن “تعهّد كَفو للاستدامة”، وهي استراتيجية وضعتها الشركة الرائدة في مجال التكنولوجيا وخدمات السيارة في إطار سعيها لتصبح محايدة للكربون والإسهام في مكافحة تغيّر المناخ. وتمثّلت الركيزة الأساسية لتعهّد كَفو للاستدامة في مشروع زراعة مليون بذرة شجرة غاف في صحراء الإمارات العربية المتحدة.
حقّقت كَفو سلسلة من التطويرات في مبادراتها ضمن تعهّد كَفو للاستدامة، على رأسها إنشاء قسم جديد للاستدامة والمجتمع العام الماضي، لدفع هذه الاستراتيجية. ومنذ ذلك الحين، قامت نبرة البوسعيدي، التي تولّت إدارة هذا القسم، بقيادة الشركة إلى سلسلة من الإنجازات والمشاريع بالإضافة إلى مشروع شجرة الغاف.
