Abu Dhabi Festival Presents Virtuoso Nicola Benedetti Telling the ‘Story of the Violin’

In words and music, Benedetti passionately tells the story of four famous compositions by Biber, Bach, Paganini and Ysaÿe

Under the sponsorship of its lead partner Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala), the 18^th edition of the Abu Dhabi Festival, held under the theme ‘The Future Starts Now’, unveils The Story of the Violin, a unique performance by star violinist Nicola Benedetti, CBE on 29 June.

The intimate virtual concert will feature Benedetti, alone on a rustic stage, vividly describing the little-known histories and intricacies that make four violin compositions from the last 350 years seminal to the instrument’s captivating story. Following each narrative, Benedetti will then play the composition with the passion that has grown out of the deep connection she feels to each of these pieces by Biber, Bach, Niccolò Paganini and Eugène Ysaÿe.

The performance will be presented across Abu Dhabi Festival’s digital channels, in cooperation with the Benedetti Foundation. In addition, a piece composed by Wynton Marsalis for a special project by the Benedetti Foundation will be played by violin proteges around the world.

Held under the theme ‘The Future Starts Now’, the year-long programme for the 18^th edition of Abu Dhabi Festival combines a unique hybrid programme of virtual and in-person performances, exhibitions and events leveraging the latest digital technology, and with the participation of over 500 artists from more than 50 countries. The Festival will provide audiences with 16 exciting world premieres, 12 festival productions, eight global co-productions and four exclusive commissions, with 1 global music tour.

New album from Nicola Benedetti on Decca Classics: Baroque

Decca Classics has announced a new Baroque album from Grammy award-winning violinist Nicola Benedetti. This is the first album Benedetti has released on a period set-up including gut strings, and she is joined by a leading group of freelance baroque musicians, forming the Benedetti Baroque Orchestra for the very first time. The album features a selection of concerti by Vivaldi plus Geminiani’s incredible arrangement of Corelli’s ‘La Folia’, one of the oldest western classical themes which has been arranged by many composers over time, particularly in the baroque era. Geminiani was one of the greatest violinists of the era and Corelli was one of his teachers whilst growing up in Italy. Later when he moved to London, Geminiani reworked a number of Corelli’s works for local audiences including this arrangement of ‘La Folia’. Singles will be released on 4, 25 June and 2 July in the lead-up to the full album being available from Friday 16 July.

Baroque Virtual Sessions: July 2021

Baroque music is a gift to the world of music education and for the first time the Benedetti Foundation presents the Baroque Virtual Sessions for three weeks in July. Following the enormous success of the four Virtual Sessions which have taken place during the pandemic, the Benedetti Foundation will work with musicians of all ages and stages on Geminiani’s La Folia which features on the Baroque album. This work is a ‘Theme and Variations’ and will be especially arranged by the Ayoub Sisters for all levels of playing from beginner to advanced. The Sessions will be led by experts in baroque performance and supported by the Foundation’s brilliant team of tutors. Together they will pull apart the fundamental elements of baroque music, working on expression, interplay, structure, bass lines, improvisation, dance, rhythm and virtuosity. The Foundation will also collaborate with a group of young and innovative dancers, who will help participants to set their bodies free to explore rhythm and expression.

8 concerts at Battersea Arts Centre in London

UK audiences can enjoy a series of eight intimate, live concerts of music featured on the new album in the beautiful setting of Battersea Arts Centre’s Grand Hall from 18 – 21 July, the same venue Baroque was recorded in. These concerts will last approximately one hour and are presented by Nicola Benedetti with Askonas Holt. The atmosphere will be conversational, spontaneous, uplifting and personal. The concerts will prove to be a unique offer bringing much needed joy as we emerge from the pandemic, and audiences are welcomed back into the COVID-secure concert hall.

بالكلمات والموسيقى تروي «بينيديتي» بشغف قصة 4 مقطوعات شهيرة لبيبر وباخ ونيكولو باغانيني وأوجين إيساييه

ضمن أعمال التكليف والإنتاج الخاص، وفي دورته الثامنة عشرة، تحت شعار «المستقبل يبدأ الآن»، وبرعاية الشريك الرئيسي شركة مبادلة للاستثمار «مبادلة»، يقدم مهرجان أبوظبي 2021، بالتعاون مع «مؤسسة بينيديتي» الثقافية، الثلاثاء، 29 يونيو الجاري، فعالية «حكاية الكمان»، مع عازفة الكمان الأشهر بين أقرانها والحائزة على «وسام الامتياز للإمبراطورية البريطانية» نيكولا بينيديتي، والتي تُعرض افتراضياً عبر المنصات الرقمية للمهرجان.

وستروي «بينيديتي» في «حكاية الكمان»، قصصاً وحقائق تاريخية لأربعة مقطوعات للكمان أُلفت منذ أكثر من ثلاثة قرون وكان لها الأثر الأكبر على تاريخ هذه الآلة الساحرة. ومن ثمّ ستعزف هذه المقطوعات الموسيقية لمشاهير عالم الموسيقى بيبر وباخ وباجانيني وإيساييه، إضافة إلى عزف مقطوعة موسيقية من تأليف أسطورة الجاز وينتون مارساليس سيقوم بعزفها مجموعة من الموسيقيين، لتقدم للجمهور حواراً موسيقياً متناغماً بين آلات الكمان، وتبحر بعشاق الموسيقى الكلاسيكية الأصيلة في أمسية فنية ساحرة.

من جانبها، قالت سعادة هدى إبراهيم الخميس، مؤسس مجموعة أبوظبي للثقافة والفنون، المؤسس والمدير الفني لمهرجان أبوظبي، «إنّ الثقافة والفنون، في ظل ما يعايشه شعوب العالم من تحديات بسبب كوفيد 19، ساهما بشكل كبير في التخفيف من أثر الجائحة لتنهض بالقطاع الثقافي من الركود الناتج عنها».

وأضافت سعادتها، «ننطلق اليوم في إطار شراكتنا الاستراتيجية مع مؤسسة بينيديتي الثقافية، لتقديم عازفة الكمان الأشهر في عصرها، نيكولا بينيديتي، في عزفها المؤلفات الموسيقية لنخبة من مؤلفي الموسيقى العالميين من أمثال بيبر، باخ، باغانيني، وإساي، مضافاً إليها المقطوعة التي ألفها خصيصا لها الموسيقار العالمي الشهير أسطورة الجاز، وينتون مارساليس، مؤكدين على رؤية مهرجان أبوظبي، في فتح آفاق جديدة من التعاون والتكامل لخدمة الثقافة والإنسانية، وتعزيز دور الإمارات إقليمياً وعالمياً، في استدامة الإبداع وحوار الثقافات، وتحفيز الحراك الثقافي والإبداعي».

وتابعت سعادتها، «أن حكاية الكمان تعبر بنا إلى تاريخ آلة الكمان وآفاقها الإبداعية مجسدةً في أداء وأحاسيس عازفةٍ مبدعة تقدّم عملاً تاريخياً سيصل بكل ما فيه من شغف وما يحمله من إتقان، إلى الأجيال القادمة».

ستُعرض الفعالية، افتراضياً على جميع قنوات مهرجان أبوظبي الرقمية بالتعاون مع مؤسسة بينيديتي من العاصمة البريطانية لندن في تمام الساعة 8 مساءً بتوقيت الإمارات العربية المتحدة؛ حيث تقدم الفاعلية عرضاً منفرداً ورائعاً يتضمن ألحاناً لمشاهير عالم الموسيقى من مختلف أنحاء العالم، إضافة إلى الاحتفاء بتاريخ آلة الكمان وآفاقها الإبداعية وقدرتها على إثارة العواطف والأحاسيس.

من جانبه، قال سعادة منصور عبدالله خلفان بالهول، سفير الدولة لدى المملكة المتحدة، «إنَّ دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة والمملكة المتحدة تتمتعان بتاريخ طويل من التعاون الثقافي، والذي ينعكس في المبادرات والشراكات التي تشمل المعارض الفنية وبرامج التبادل الثقافي والموسيقى والفنون المسرحية».

وأضاف سعادته، «فخور بتقديم مهرجان أبوظبي هذه الفعالية لجمهور عالمي بالتزامن مع احتفالنا بمرور 50 عامًا على علاقتنا القوية مع المملكة المتحدة»، متابعاً «من المؤكد أن فعالية نيكولا بينيديتي ستكون حدثاً لا يُسنى، فهي موسيقية موهوبة بشكل لا يصدق، وأنا متأكد أن هذا العرض سيُلهم الموسيقيين وعشاق الموسيقى من جميع الأعمار».

وعن الفعالية، قالت نيكولا بينيديتي، «أنا متحمسة جدًا لمشاركة هذا المشروع مع جمهور مهرجان أبوظبي، هذا عرض شخصي وفريد يحتفل بتاريخ هذه الآلة السحرية وقوتها العاطفية، ومن خلال هذه الأعمال الأساسية الأربعة، التي أُلفت منذ نحو 350 عامًا، نستكشف قصة وصوت الكمان غير العاديين»، مضيفة «يسعدني أننا تمكنا من خلال مؤسسة بينيديتي الثقافية، من العمل مع طلاب الكمان من جميع أنحاء العالم على قطعة مؤلفة خصيصًا من قبل وينتون مارساليس».

وقال سعادة باتريك مودي، السفير البريطاني في الإمارات، «أنا متحمس للغاية لسماع أن نيكولا بينيديتي ستقدم عرضاً موسيقياً ضمن فعاليات مهرجان أبوظبي في وقت لاحق من هذا الشهر».

وتابع سعادته، «نيكولا عازفة كمان بريطانية حائزة على العديد من الجوائز وواحدة من أكثر الفنانين الكلاسيكيين تأثيراً في جيلها، وهي ومدافعة متحمسة عن الموسيقى الكلاسيكية والتعليم الموسيقي»، مؤكداً «ليس لدي أدنى شك أن الجمهور الافتراضي لمهرجان أبوظبي سينبهر بأداء نيكولا الموسيقي».

سيبدأ عرض حكاية الكمان في 29 يونيو الساعة 08:00 مساءً بتوقيت الإمارات العربية المتحدة، ليشكل تجربة افتراضية فريدة من نوعها مصورة بشكل احترافي؛ احتفاءً بتاريخ آلة الكمان وقوتها العاطفية ومؤلفاتها الموسيقية المميزة

جدير بالذكر، أن فعاليات مهرجان أبوظبي 2021، في دورته الثامنة عشرة تحت شعار «المستقبل يبدأ الآن» تستمر- على مدار عام كامل- حيث يدمج بين العروض التقليدية والعروض الافتراضية المعتمدة على أحدث التقنيات الرقمية، كما يتميز بمجموعة فريدة من عروض الأداء والمعارض، بمشاركة 500 فنان من أكثر من 50 بلداً، فضلاً عن 16 عرضاً عالمياً للمرة الأولى، و12 إنتاجاً جديداً للمهرجان، و8 أعمال إنتاج عالمي مشتركة، إلى جانب 4 أعمال تكليف حصري، وجولة غنائية حول العالم.

ويدمج مهرجان أبوظبي 2021، في نسخته الثامنة عشرة، بين العروض التقليدية والعروض الافتراضية المعتمدة على أحدث التقنيات الرقمية، في إطار رؤية واضحة لمواكبة التحول الرقمي المتسارع، واستدامة المبادرات والأنشطة الثقافية.

مهرجان أبوظبي

تأسس مهرجان أبوظبي عام 2004 تحت رعاية سمو الشيخ عبد الله بن زايد آل نهيان، وزير الإعلام والثقافة آنذاك (وزير الخارجية والتعاون الدولي حالياً) وحظي المهرجان برعاية كريمة من صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن زايد آل نهيان، ولي عهد أبوظبي، نائب القائد الأعلى للقوات المسلحة، في الفترة من 2007 لغاية 2011.
