AL JALILA CHILDREN’S SPECIALTY HOSPITAL TO EXAMINE INTENSIVE CARE GENOME SEQUENCING WORKFLOW
Study Follows Agreement with Illumina at Arab Health 2021
AJCSH and University of Balamand Dubai Sign Genetics and Genomics Research & Training MoU
Dubai, UAE, 22 June 2021: Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital (AJCSH), the UAE’s first and only hospital dedicated to treating children and adolescents, is to formulate a steering group to study the workflow of genome sequencing in the intensive care setting. The move follows an agreement between the hospital and Illumina Netherlands BV at Arab Health 2021, the Middle East’s leading medical equipment exhibition, which runs in Dubai until 24 June.
The group will look to develop practical knowledge of healthcare providers in genome sequencing in neonatal and pediatric intensive care settings. It will also seek to improve the use of testing, fostering greater understanding of best-use cases, clinical indicators, and the health economics of genome sequencing in the specialized setting.
Under the agreement, Illumina, the world’s leader in next-generation sequencing, is to provide technical expertise, reagents and analysis tools and training to the group.
“There is increasing evidence for rapid, efficient and cost-event genome sequencing in newborns and babies that will save lives,” said Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, COO, AJCH. “The application of next-generation sequencing has revolutionised the process of making complex diagnoses in paediatric medicine, significantly shortening the time for accurate diagnosis and optimal clinical management in critically ill children.
“Thanks to the support of our partners and stakeholders, this working group will once again push the boundaries in the quest to save young lives,” added Dr. Al Awadhi.
Illumina says its support for the working group is in line with its drive to promote the development of expert consensus on genome sequencing best practice within intensive care.

Meanwhile, AJCSH, has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the independent University of Balamand Dubai (UOBD) which will see the entities collaborate in mutually beneficial educational, training, research, and internship opportunities for the university’s students and its faculty.

As such, this collaboration would allow our students and faculty members to engage in mutually beneficial educational, training, research and internship opportunities at Al Jalila Children’s Genomics Centre, covering areas related to cutting-edge biotechnology and genetics testing. This will support our objective to serve the UAE society and contribute to the advancement of the UAE in every sphere.”

AJCH is participating at Arab Health 2021 as part of the Dubai Healthcare City stand alongside partners Mohammed Bin Rashid University Of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) and Al Jalila Foundation, which promotes medical education and research by investing in the UAE’s medical treatment capabilities.

توقيع مذكرة تفاهم وتدريب وبحث بين المستشفى وجامعة البلمند دبي في مجال علم الوراثة والجينات
أعلن مستشفى الجليلة التخصصي للأطفال، المستشفى الأول والوحيد في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة المتخصص كلياً في طب الأطفال واليافعين، عن تشكيل فريق توجيهي لدراسة سير عمليات تسلسل الجينوم في وحدة العناية المركزة. يأتي هذا الإعلان عقب توقيع اتفاقية بين المستشفى وشركة إلومينا نيذرلاندز، خلال معرض ومؤتمر الصحة العربي 2021، الرائد في الشرق الأوسط، والذي تستضيفه دبي حتى 24 يونيو.
وسيبحث الفريق سبل تطوير معارف مقدمي الرعاية الصحية في مجال علم تسلسل الجينوم عند حديثي الولادة والعناية المركزة للأطفال. كما تهدف الخطوة إلى تحسين سبل استخدام الاختبارات، وتعزيز إدراك الحالات المثلى لاستخدام هذه التقنية، والمؤشرات السريرية والاقتصاديات الصحية لعلم تسلسل الجينوم في البيئات المتخصصة.
وبموجب هذه الاتفاقية، ستقدم إلومينا، الشركة الرائدة عالمياً في مجال علم تسلسل الجينوم، خبراتها التقنية في مجال المسابر وأدوات التحليل إلى جانب تدريب فريق المستشفى.
وتعليقاً على توقيع هذه الاتفاقية، قال الدكتور محمد العوضي، المدير التنفيذي للعمليات في مستشفى الجليلة التخصصي للأطفال: “هناك أدلة متزايدة على نجاح إجراءات تسلسل الجينوم في تحسين إمكانية إنقاذ حياة حديثي الولادة والرضّع بصورة سريعة وفعّالة وبتكلفة بسيطة. “وشكّل استخدام الجيل الجديد من إجراءات التسلسل تغييراً جذرياً في عالم تشخيص الحالات المعقدة في طب الأطفال، مما سيساهم في تقليل الزمن اللازم للتوصل للتشخيص إلى حدٍ كبير، وتقديم الرعاية الطبية المثالية للأطفال المصابين بأمراض خطيرة”.
وأضاف الدكتور العوضي: “بفضل دعم شركائنا والجهات المعنية ستتمكن هذه المجموعة من مواصلة سعيها لتحقيق ابتكارات جديدة في سبيل إنقاذ حياة الأطفال”.
من جانبها، أكدت شركة إلومينا أن دعمها لمجموعة العمل هذه يتماشى مع سعيها لتحقيق توافق علمي ما بين الخبراء حول الممارسات الأفضل في مجال تسلسل الجينوم في وحدات العناية المركزة.
من جانبه قال السيد قال جريج غونزاليس، مدير إلومينا الشرق الأوسط: “يسعدنا التعاون مع مستشفى الجليلة التخصصي للأطفال لتقييم إجراءات عملية تسلسل الجينوم، وتوفير المعرفة المطلوبة والخبرات اللازمة التي تعين الأطباء على اتخاذ القرار بشأن آلية العلاج بدقة وكفاءة، لا سيما عند التعامل مع حالات العناية الحثيثة وخاصة الأطفال حديثي الولادة”.
وفي سياق آخر وقع المستشفى مذكرة تفاهم مع جامعة بلمند دبي، ليقوم الطرفان بموجبها بالعمل سوية لتطوير وطرح فرص تدريبية وتعليمية وبحثية تعود بالفائدة على المؤسستين، لا سيما على طلاب الجامعة وهيئتها التدريسية.
وعلّق الدكتور جهاد نادر نائب رئيس جامعة البلمند المستقلة بدبي ورئيسها التنفيذي قائلاً: “تشكل هذه الاتفاقية مع مستشفى الجليلة التخصصي للأطفال فرصة لجامعتنا لتؤكد التزامها الراسخ بتعزيز علاقات التعاون بينها وبين المؤسسات الرائدة في الإمارات، إذ يشكّل التميّز في التدريس والبحث العلمي الحثيث والعناية بالمصلحة العامة جوهر المهمة الإنسانية للجامعة. وسيتيح هذا التعاون لطلبتنا وأعضاء هيئتنا التدريسية فرصة المشاركة في نشاطات تعليمية وتدريبية وبحثية وفي فرص تدريب في مركز أبحاث الجينات الوراثية لدى مستشفى الجليلة، والتي ستغطي أحدث الاكتشافات في مجال التكنولوجيا الحيوية والاختبارات الوراثية، وستعود بالفائدة على المؤسستين. كما سيدعم هذا التعاون أهدافنا في خدمة المجتمع الإماراتي والمساهمة في دفع عجلة تقدّم الإمارات في جميع المجالات”.
واختتم الدكتور العوضي قائلاً: “يشكّل توقيع هذه المذكرة شاهداً على التزام المستشفى وجامعة بلمند دبي بتقديم أفضل الفرص العملية للطلبة لاكتساب الخبرة في جميع الأقسام والنشاطات لدى المستشفى بما فيها التدريب والبحث العلمي. وستساهم هذه الشراكة في تقوية نظام الرعاية الصحية في الإمارات، إلى جانب تقديم الأدوات المناسبة لمواجهة التحديات التي قد تواجههم في المستقبل”.
تأتي مشاركة مستشفى الجليلة التخصصي للأطفال في معرض ومؤتمر الصحة العربي 2021 ضمن جناح سلطة مدينة دبي الطبية إلى جانب شركائها في جامعة محمد بن راشد للطب والعلوم الصحية ومؤسسة الجليلة، بهدف تطوير قطاع التعليم والبحث العلمي في مجال الطب عبر الاستثمار في الإمكانيات العلاجية في دولة الإمارات.{:}
