Containing the fire at Jebel Ali Port

The UAE took swift action, showcasing its robust responsibility to control maritime accidents and manage risks

• Owing to years of pro-active planned preparation in developing world-class infrastructure in our ports and offshore facilities and an outstanding immediate response, the fire was controlled within 44 minutes
• Our priority now is to ensure that the accident will not impact the marine environment
• All logistical operations at Jebel Ali Port have been resumed efficiently as they were prior to the accident

We appreciate and commend the efforts of the teams who contributed to containing the fire that broke out at 11:55pm on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, due to a blaze onboard the container ship “Ocean Trader”. At the helm of the rescue operations were the DP World, UAE Region team, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and personnel from the Dubai Civil Defense and the Dubai Police. The evacuation procedure of the ship’s crew and workers on the berth was carried out promptly. While containing the fire and ensuring no fatalities, the rescue team also took the necessary safety measures to ensure that there were no radioactive materials on the ship.

This robust response comes as a result of years of pro-active planned preparation in developing world-class infrastructure in the ports and marine facilities in the UAE. Our primary aim is to place safety first, in addition to investing heavily in early warning systems and immediate communication with civil defence teams and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority. This approach has enabled us to take all necessary measures immediately. The concerted efforts of the teams and the availability of state-of-the-art equipment to tackle such an event ensured the resumption of all operational and logistical operations in Jebel Ali Port.

Our priority now is to safeguard the marine environment by monitoring the situation and preventing the release of harmful substances in the water body. The Maritime Department at the Ministry will continue investigations to gain insights and chart out a blueprint in coordination with the relevant international authorities to intensify precautionary measures.

We assure the people of Dubai and the UAE, including individuals, institutions and those associated with the maritime sector, that the logistics and operational facilities of Jebel Ali Port have not suffered any damage, and the accident has not affected the movement of ships due to its distance from the main shipping line and the water channel in the port. By virtue of our commitment to safety protocols and maintaining the efficiency of providing integrated marine and logistical services with the highest standards of quality and speed, we reaffirm that the UAE, owing to its premier ports, will continue to hold the title of being a leading maritime centre in the region and around the globe.

• تأتي هذه الاستجابة القياسية التي لم تتجاوز 44 دقيقة للسيطرة التامة على الحريق، كثمرة لسنوات طويلة من التحضير والاستعداد المسبق في تطوير بنية تحتية عالمية المستوى في موانئنا ومرافقنا البحرية
• أولويتنا الآن هي مواصلة التأكد من أن الحادث لن يتسبب في أي تسرب لمواد ضارة بالبيئة البحرية
• تم استئناف جميع العمليات التشغيلية واللوجستية في ميناء جبل علي كما كانت عليه قبل وقوع الحادث

نتوجه بالتقدير والإشادة بجهود كل من ساهم في التغلب على الحريق الذي نشب في تمام الساعة 11:55 مساء يوم الأربعاء الموافق٧ يوليو ٢٠٢١ بسبب احتراق حاوية على متن سفينة الحاويات “أوشن تريدر”، وعلى رأسهم فريق موانئ دبي العالمية-إقليم الإمارات، والهيئة الوطنية لإدارة الطوارئ والأزمات والكوارث، وأبطال الدفاع المدني وشرطة دبي، الذين تمكنوا من إخلاء طاقم السفينة وجميع العاملين على الرصيف، والتأكد من عدم وجود مواد مشعة في السفينة، ليتم احتواء الحريق وآثاره السلبية من دون أي إصابات في الأرواح.

وتأتي هذه الاستجابة القياسية كثمرة لسنوات طويلة من التحضير والاستعداد المسبق في تطوير بنية تحتية عالمية المستوى في موانئنا ومرافقنا البحرية، تضع “السلامة أولًا” وفوق كل اعتبار، إضافة إلى الاستثمار بشكل كبير في أنظمة الإنذار المبكر والتواصل الفوري مع فرق الدفاع المدني والهيئة الوطنية لإدارة الطوارئ والأزمات والكوارث، ما سمح باتخاذ جميع الإجراءات اللازمة على الفور، وتواجد الفرق والتجهيزات الضرورية للتعامل مع الحدث، وضمان عودة الأمور إلى مسارها الطبيعي، واستئناف جميع العمليات التشغيلية واللوجستية في ميناء جبل علي كما كانت عليه قبل وقوع الحادث.

أولويتنا الآن هي مواصلة التأكد من أن الحادث لن يتسبب في أي تسرب لمواد ضارة بالبيئة البحرية، وأنه قد تمت السيطرة عليه وعلى آثاره تمامًا. وسيقوم فريق إدارة القطاع البحري في الوزارة بمواصلة التحقيق في الحادث، لنستخلص الدروس المستفادة ونعمل بالتنسيق مع الجهات الدولية المعنية على تكثيف الإجراءات الاحترازية التي من شأنها الحد من وقوع الأضرار الناجمة عن الحوادث البحرية.

ونطمئن الجمهور في دبي ودولة الإمارات من الأفراد والمؤسسات وجميع المعنيين بالقطاع البحري، أن مرافق ميناء جبل علي اللوجستية والتشغيلية لم تتعرض لأي ضرر، وكذلك لم يؤثر الحادث على حركة السفن لبعده عن الخط الملاحي الرئيس والقناة المائية في الميناء. ونؤكد مجددًا أن دولة الإمارات وموانئها ستظل دائمًا المركز البحري الرائد في المنطقة وعلى مستوى العالم، بالتزامها التام بإجراءات السلامة، وكفاءتها العالية في تقديم الخدمات البحرية واللوجستية المتكاملة وبأعلى معايير الجودة والسرعة.
