Sharjah Sustainable City Teams Up with American University of Sharjah to Host Sustainability Webinar Discussions
Academics, students, and industry professionals converge to discuss practical solutions in sustainable urban planning
Sharjah Sustainable City, a fully sustainable community by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), teamed up with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) to host a series of webinar discussions for academics to discuss energy and climate change, smarter mobility, ecodistricts and sustainable materials.
Over 370 students, faculty and staff from AUS along with industry practitioners from Sharjah Sustainable City attended the different webinars, held throughout the recently concluded spring semester, to learn about the practical implementations of sustainable development theories on housing communities, and their effectiveness on ground in the new Sharjah development. Professors in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, and the College of Architecture, Art and Design were able to incorporate the webinars into their classroom learning.
Yousif Ahmed Al-Mutawa, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Sustainable City, said: “As a Sharjah-based project, it is important to us that we engage with the local Sharjah community and find areas of synergy where we can add value. The American University of Sharjah is one of the leading educational institutions in the region and home to many respected academics along with some of the brightest young minds, so this series of discussions has been a fantastic opportunity to share our expertise with the next generation of sustainability professionals.”
Rose Armour, Head of Sustainability at the American University of Sharjah, said: “The collaboration allowed students to learn first-hand what it takes to incorporate sustainability principles into a project like Sharjah Sustainable City and the impact it can have on our individual and community carbon footprint. This is invaluable insight for students. It brings all of the knowledge gained in the classroom to life.”
As a direct result of the webinars, a team of students will be measuring and evaluating the thermal insulation of one villa while another team will share information on their 3D concrete printing project, and its potential applications on ground. The upcoming Fall semester will see the start of research projects with the College of Engineering and potential co-authoring of a research paper on urban planning, among other planned collaborations between the two entities.
Dr. Adil Tamimi, Professor of Civil Engineering at AUS, said: “The webinars provided a great window for our students and faculty alike to interact with prominent professionals who are working on the development of SSC. For my classes, it has substituted the face-to face site visits that have been limited by COVID-19 and has enriched the students’ knowledge and supported the delivery in my courses.”
Sharjah Sustainable City is the first fully integrated residential sustainable city in Sharjah, aiming to create a net zero energy, vibrant community offering a unique and sustainable lifestyle. التقى الأكاديميون والطلاب والمتخصصون في القطاع لمناقشة الحلول العملية في التخطيط المدني المستدام
نظّمت مدينة الشارقة المستدامة، أحد مشاريع هيئة الشارقة للاستثمار والتطوير (شروق)، بالتعاون مع الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة، سلسلة من النقاشات عبر الإنترنت للطلاب والأكاديميين لمناقشة مواضيع الطاقة والتغيّر المناخي، والتنقل الأكثر ذكاءً، والمناطق البيئية والمواد المستدامة.
شارك أكثر من 370 طالباً من ضمنهم أعضاء الهيئة التدريسية والموظفين في الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة إلى جانب اختصاصيين من مدينة الشارقة المستدامة، في ندوات مختلفة عُقدت خلال فصل الربيع الذي اختُتم مؤخّراً، من أجل التعرّف على التطبيقات العملية لمبادئ التنمية المستدامة في المجمّعات السكنية، وتأثيرها الإيجابي على أرض الواقع في المشروع الجديد في الشارقة. وعمل الأساتذة في كلية الآداب والعلوم وكلية الهندسة وكلية العمارة والفنون والتصميم على دمج الندوات التي أقيمت عبر الإنترنت في منهجهم الدراسي.
وبهذا الصدد، صرّح السيّد يوسف أحمد المطوّع، المدير التنفيذي لمدينة الشارقة المستدامة، قائلاً: “يهمنا في مدينة الشارقة المستدامة أن نكون على تواصل مع المجتمع المحلّي في إمارة الشارقة وأن نجد فرصاً للتعاون تسمح لنا بإحداث تغيير إيجابي على المجتمع. تعدّ الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة واحدة من المؤسسات التعليمية العليا الرائدة في المنطقة وهي تضمّ الكثير من الأساتذة والأكاديميين الموقّرين والعقول الشابّة اللامعة، وقد شكّلت هذه السلسلة من المناقشات عبر الإنترنت فرصة رائعة لمشاركة خبراتنا مع الجيل المقبل من المحترفين والخبراء في مجال الاستدامة.”
وصرّحت من جانبها روز آرمور، رئيس قسم الاستدامة في الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة، قائلة: “لقد سمح هذا التعاون لطلابنا بالتعرّف إلى ما يتطلّبه تحقيق مشروع مثل مدينة الشارقة المستدامة ومبادئ الاستدامة التي يجب اعتمادها وتأثيرها في بصمتنا الكربونية على صعيد الفرد والمجتمع. كما ومنحهم ذلك فرصة قيّمة جداً لرؤية تلك المبادئ تُطبّق على أرض الواقع ولمسوا أهميّة ما تعلّموه في الصفّ، وكيف يساهم اختصاصهم في الحفاظ على استدامة الكوكب.”
ومن أجل تطبيق ما تمّ تعلّمه في الندوات، سيقوم فريق من الطلاب بتقييم العزل الحراري المطلوب لواحدة من الفلل مع أخذ القياسات اللازمة، بينما سيقوم فريق آخر بتقديم المعلومات عن المشروع الذي قاموا بإنجازه حول الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد للخرسانة وإمكانات تطبيقه على الأرض. وخلال الفصل الدراسي المقبل في الخريف سيتمّ البدء بالمشاريع البحثية مع كلية الهندسة مع إمكانية تأليف ورقة بحثية مشتركة حول التخطيط الحضري، من بين أوجه التعاون الأخرى المخطط لها بين الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة ومدينة الشارقة المستدامة.”
وفي هذا الإطار، علّق الدكتور عادل التميمي، أستاذ الهندسة المدنية في الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة، قائلاً: “لقد وفّرت تلك الندوات عبر الإنترنت نافذة رائعة لطلابنا والهيئة التعليمية على حدّ سواء للتفاعل مع المهنيين والقيّمين على تطوير مدينة الشارقة المستدامة والاستفادة من خبرتهم في القطاع. أمّا بالنسبة لصفوفي، فقد حلّت هذه الندوات مكان الزيارات الميدانية التي كانت مقيّدة بسبب جائحة كورونا، كما أنّها أثرت معرفة الطلاب وساعدتني إلى حدّ كبير في تقديم صفوفي.”
جرى تصميم مدينة الشارقة المستدامة بهدف التخفيف من البصمة الكربونية في إمارة الشارقة، حيث تعمل المدينة بالطاقة الشمسية بنسبة 100٪، وتعيد تدوير 100٪ من المياه والنفايات، إلى جانب تطبيق الزراعة الحضرية، كما أنها مصممة بشكل يشجّع على ممارسة الأنشطة الرياضية مثل المشي، واستخدام التنقل النظيف. وباستخدام مواد البناء العازلة للحرارة والنوافذ، وأنظمة المنازل الذكية، والتجهيزات الكهربائية المتميزة من حيث استهلاك الطاقة، إضافة إلى الألواح الشمسية على الأسطح، من المتوقع أن توفّر الوحدات السكنية في مدينة الشارقة المستدامة ما يصل إلى 50٪ على فواتير الكهرباء والمياه للسكان.
