Culture and history take centre stage as Syria
marks its Expo 2020 National Day
DUBAI, 14 November 2021 – Syria celebrates its Expo 2020 National Day on Sunday with a visit by the country’s Prime Minister and an array of cultural activities and entertainment showcasing its ancient history, including a performance inspired by Sufi poetry and Syrian heritage and a dance performance inspired by folklore.
Dr Mohammed Samir Al Khalil, Syria’s Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade led the delegation, and was welcomed by Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director, Commissioner General Office, Expo 2020 Dubai.
Dr Mohammed Samir Al Khalil said: “I congratulate the UAE on hosting this special event and congratulate the workforce team on their efforts to host Expo 2020 Dubai. At a time when the world is facing the most difficult challenges, they were able to prove to the world that the UAE deserves hosting the most important international events, with excellence, creativity and mastery.
“Our celebration today is a continuation of the events held in our Syria Pavilion, which paints a microcosm of loving Syria, the cradle of civilisations, the essence of history and the land of the future. On the national day of the country of wheat, olives, laurels and jasmine, which lives in us wherever we go, we emphasise the theme of our participation in Expo 2020 Dubai: ‘Together…. the future is ours’”.
Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali said: “Syria’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai is vital, given that the event serves as a global platform for Syria to showcase its rich history and ancient legacy, in addition to its economic priorities and future plans for reconstruction. It is well known that Syria has one of the oldest civilisations in the world, and that its capital, Damascus, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world which historically served as a major trade hub on the Silk Road from Asia. To this day, Syria plays a significant role in industry and agriculture within region, and the Syria Pavilion beautifully showcases these attributes.
“The UAE and Syria have long-standing historical ties based on brotherhood and a common language, religion, and culture… Our appreciation for Syrian society began with the establishment of the UAE, and the key role that our Syrian brothers have played in the fields of medicine, education, media, and broadcast industries in the UAE over the years shall always be remembered with a great deal of respect and gratitude.”
The Syria Pavilion hosted a live Arabic calligraphy show, while the Damascus Brass Quartet entertained audiences at Sun Stage. ‘Peace it is, until the break of Dawn’, a mesmerising visual projection telling a tale as old as time, will be shown at Al Wasl Plaza in the evening, while the day will be crowned with musician Mouhamad Khairy’s tributes to the late Syrian tenor Sabah Fakhri, and the legend of Qudoud Halabiya – traditional Syrian songs that have been nominated for UNESCO status – at Jubilee Park.
Located in the Mobility District, the Syria Pavilion showcases the country’s seminal place in human history. It was home to the first crops, the first alphabet, the first musical note, and the first poem. The pavilion features a range of attractions — through seven key experiences — that provide an understanding of this ancient culture. Visitors can perform the ‘Hurrian Hymn’, the oldest musical notation known to humankind, learn about the development of the early writing systems and the first alphabets and discover the first agricultural societies, developed almost 15,000 years ago.
National and Honour Days at Expo 2020 Dubai are moments to celebrate each of our 200-plus International Participants, shining a light on their culture and achievements and showcasing their pavilions and programming. Each features a flag-raising ceremony at the Stage of Nations in Al Wasl Plaza, followed by speeches and cultural performances.
Running until 31 March 2022, Expo 2020 has invited visitors from across the planet to join the making of a new world in a six-month celebration of human creativity, innovation, progress and culture.

سورية تحتفل بيومها الوطني في إكسبو 2020 دبي
دبي، 14 نوفمبر 2021 – احتفلت سورية بيومها الوطني في إكسبو 2020 دبي، اليوم، من خلال مجموعة من الأنشطة الثقافية والترفيهية التي استعرضت تاريخها العريق، من بينها عرض مستوحى من الشعر الصوفي والتراث السوري أقيم في ساحة الوصل، وعرض راقص مستوحى من الفلكلور الشعبي على منصة البحر.
وقد ترأس الوفد السوري في حفل اليوم الوطني، معالي الدكتور محمد سامر الخليل، وزير الاقتصاد والتجارة الخارجية في سورية، حيث رحّب فيه نجيب العلي، المدير التنفيذي لمكتب المفوض العام في إكسبو 2020 دبي.
وقالي معالي الدكتور محمد سامر الخليل: “أهنيء دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، على استضافة إكسبو 2020 دبي، الذي يعتبر حدثاً مميّزاً، وأنا أهنيء الفريق العامل على جهوده المبذولة لإقامة إكسبو 2020 دبي في وقت يواجه فيه العالم أصعب التحدّيات، وقد استطاع أن يثبت بأنّ دولة الإمارات تستحق وبجدارة استضافة أهم التظاهرات الدولية، بتميز وإبداع وإتقان”.
وأضاف: “إنّ احتفالنا هذا اليوم، هو امتداد لفعاليات جناحنا السوري، الذي يرسم صورة مصغّرة عن سورية المحبة، مهد الحضارات، وعبق التاريخ، وأرض المستقبل. في اليوم الوطني لبلد القمح والزيتون والغار والياسمين، الساكن فينــا أينما كنّـــا، والساكنين فيه مهما ابتعدنا، نذكّر بشعار مشاركتنا في إكسبو 2020 دبي (معاً.. المستقبل لنا) الذي نسعى لتطبيقه على أرض الواقع”.
وقال نجيب محمد العلي: “إن مشاركة سورية الشقيقة في هذا الحدث الدولي أمر حيوي، فهي بمثابة منصة عالمية لعرض تاريخها الثري وإرثها العريق، فضلا عن خططها المستقبلية لإعادة البناء وأولوياتها الاقتصادية. ولا يخفى علينا أنَّ سورية تضم واحدة من أعرق الحضارات، وأنَّ عاصمتها دمشق واحدة من أقدم المدن المأهولة في العالم، فضلا عن مكانتها التاريخية، بوصفها مركزا تجاريا رئيسيا على طريق الحرير من آسيا.. وحتى يومنا هذا، لا تزال سورية قوة صناعية وزراعية مهمة في المنطقة”.
وأضاف نجيب محمد العلي: “تربط دولتي الإمارات العربية المتحدة والجمهورية العربية السورية علاقات تاريخية، بفضل ما يجمعنا من أخوّة، ولغة، ودين، وثقافة… وبدأ اهتمامنا بالمجتمع السوري منذ تأسيس دولة الإمارات، ولا ننسى دور إخواننا السوريين في مجال الطب والتعليم، والإعلام، والصناعات الإذاعية في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة”.
فعاليات متنوعة
أستضاف جناح سوريا أيضا عرضا حيا للخط العربي، بينما قدمت فرقة “رباعي دمشق” للنشيد عرضاً أمتع الجماهير على منصة الشمس. وعرِضت في ساحة الوصل مساءً فعالية بصرية سردت قصة من قديم الزمن بعنوان “سلام ، حتى مطلع الفجر”، فيما يُتوَّج اليوم في حديقة اليوبيل بتكريم يقدمه الموسيقار محمد خير للمطرب السوري الراحل صباح فخري، وبأسطورة “قدود حلبية”، وهي أغان سورية تقليدية رُشحت لتكون على قائمة اليونيسكو للتراث الإنساني.
يقع جناح سوريا في منطقة التنقل، ويستعرض مكانها المؤثر في تاريخ البشرية، حيث كانت موطنا للمحاصيل الزراعية الأولى، والأبجدية الأولى، والنوتة الموسيقية الأولى، والقصيدة الشعرية الأولى. يضم الجناح مجموعة من المعالِم تقدم فهما أعمق لهذه الثقافة العريقة عبر سبع تجارب رئيسية. يمكن للزوار أن يؤدّوا “الترنيمة الحورية”، أقدم معزوفة موسيقية عرفها البشر، والتعرف إلى تطور نُظم الكتابة القديمة وحروف الأبجدية الأولى. ويعرض الجناح معلومات عن المجتمعات الزراعية الأولى، التي نشأت منذ 15,000 عام تقريبا.
الأيام الوطنية والأيام الفخرية في إكسبو 2020 دبي هي أوقات للاحتفاء بكلٍ من مشاركينا الدوليين الذين يزيد عددهم عن 200 مشارك، حيث يُسلَّط الضوء على ثقافاتهم، وإنجازاتهم، وتُعرَض أجنحتهم وبرامجهم. ويضم كل من هذه الأيام الوطنية والفخرية مراسم رفع العلم على منصة الأمم في ساحة الوصل، تليها خطابات وعروض ثقافية.
يُقام إكسبو 2020 دبي حتى 31 مارس 2022، ويدعو الزوار من جميع أنحاء العالم لنصنع معاً عالماً جديداً، في احتفال بالإبداع البشري، والابتكار، والتقدم، والثقافة يمتد ستة أشهر.
