DUBAI, 9 December 2021 – A renowned conductor, a group of Irish musicians, four soloists, local schoolchildren, and staff and volunteers from different Expo pavilions – hailing from 150 nationalities – are all set to stage a unique musical event at Expo 2020’s Jubilee Stage on Thursday.
Conductor David Brophy, who has worked with artists as diverse as Lang Lang and U2, gave visitors a taste of the music to come during a series of rehearsals for the unique ‘You Raise Me Up’ project for Expo 2020 Dubai – an inclusive celebration of creativity, music and song. Encouraging the invited audience to sing along, the choir performed beautiful versions of Van Morrison’s ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’, and the soulful Josh Groban’s ‘You Raise Me Up’.
“This experience is like no other,” said Brophy after the rehearsal. “I’ve never done anything like this in my life. For tonight’s concert, I have no idea what’s going to happen. This is the interesting part – this performance, this concept, this idea of bringing people together to sing is a mystery to me. All I know is that singing is one of the central things we do on the planet together.”
Brophy said the response to the registration portals was phenomenal, and as many as 900 people registered within weeks.
“I think if there was ever a time or space to do this, it is now, at Expo, because after the pandemic, people really want to get together and sing, and this fantastic outdoor arena is the perfect place to bring all of these nationalities, who are all represented as part of the Expo anyway, together for an evening of singing,” he said.
As part of the project, initiated by the Ireland Pavilion, 31 musicians from Ireland have been flown in. All will be performing with the mixed choir for the very first time. The concert will feature traditional Irish instruments, such as the Irish harp, fiddle, concertina, uilleann pipes and tin whistle.
Speaking about the uniqueness of the project, Brophy said: “I have a big leap of faith in the people. Obviously there are singers I’ve never met before, and they don’t know each other. But once you start singing, people want to sing along with you. That’s what it’s like, and we meet each other and find connections very quickly when we sing.”
While the focus is on community singing, there are four soloists who will further enrich the concert: Tolu Makay, Jerry Fish, Briana Corrigan and Iarla O’Lionaird.
Soloist Makay, an upcoming Irish singer-songwriter, said: “There is just one word to describe this: phenomenal. I am looking forward to this unique experience. I have been brought up in an atmosphere of choirs back home, but performing here with people of so many nationalities is going to be something extraordinary.”
The Expo World Choir performance takes place on Thursday at 1920 on the Jubilee Stage. The concert seeks to break the current record for the most nationalities in a choir, which currently stands at 105.
{:}{:ar}دبي، 9 ديسمبر 2021 – نجح جناح دولة إيرلندا في إكسبو 2020 دبي بتشكيل جوقة موسيقية تضم 900 مشارك من 150 جنسية مختلفة، في تجربة فريدة لاستحضار أجواء الموسيقى الإيرلندية إلى مسرح اليوبيل، اليوم، ضمن عرضين فريدين، وبذلك تكسر الفرقة الرقم العالمي لأكبر عدد من الجنسيات المختلفة التي تضمها جوقة موسيقية، والذي يبلغ حالياً 105 جنسيات.
وقال ديفيد بروفي، مدير الجوقة: “جمع هذا العدد من المشاركين ليس أمراً مستحيلاً، فنحن متواجدين في إكسبو 2020 دبي، وهو حدث عالمي يوفر المساحة التي تجعله المكان الأمثل لتنفيذ أية أفكار، فبعد 20 شهرا على الجائحة، يريد الناس الاجتماع معا والغناء، وحتى إن كانوا يتحدثون لغات مختلفة، وينحدرون من خلفيات ثقافية وأعمار مختلفة، لكنهم سيغنون جميعاً بصوت واحد اليوم، وهو ما يجعل الأمر مميزاً”.
وأضاف: “هذه الجوقة تجربة استثنائية، فلم يجتمع أعضاؤها من قبل للقيام بأية تحضيرات، ولا يعرف بعضهم البعض، ولكن الموسيقى لغة عالمية وأكبر دليل على ذلك أنه، وفي غضون أسابيع قليلة من فتح باب التسجيل، بدأت الردود تتدفق بشكل فوري للانضمام للفرقة”.
تشكل الفرقة مزيجاً فسيفسائياً فريداً، فهي تضم موسيقيين محترفين، وموظفي إكسبو، وطلاب مدارس مع عائلاتهم، وفنانين منفردين من إيرلندا، مثل تولو ماكاي، وجيري فيش، وإيارلا أو ليونيرد. ويستخدم في الجوقة الآلات الموسيقية التقليدية المستخدمة في إيرلندا، والتي بالرغم من كونها دولة صغيرة، لكنها نجحت في ايجاد إرث موسيقي عالمي.{:}
