DUBAI, 13 December 2021 – Chess Grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili led a delegation today (13 December) at Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC), Expo 2020 Dubai, alongside a number of other female competitors who have shattered world records and redefined the game.
The Georgian is a force to be reckoned with – she was the first woman to be awarded the title of Grandmaster in 1978, and is also a five-time World Champion and 11-time winner of the World Chess Olympiad.
At 80, she still plays tournaments — she won the women’s 65+ section at the World Senior Championship in Romania in 2019 — and continues to inspire new generations of young women in a nation where chess champions enjoy star status.
Thanks to Gaprindashvili and her contemporaries, chess has taken great strides, but with only 37 women out of more than 1,600 Grandmasters internationally, the traditionally male-dominated sport still has a way to go towards equality.
Nona Gaprindashvili said: “My four brothers used to arrange chess games at our home in Zugdidi, Georgia, and even though I was the youngest, they always included me – and I never came last. My older brother was the best chess player in our town … I learned to play by watching him.”
Steered by Gaprindashvili, the rise of Georgian chess players during the Soviet era saw the emergence of the term “the Georgian phenomenon”.
Fellow Grandmaster Nana Ioseliani, who was also part of the delegation, said Gaprindashvili was her inspiration and credits her with opening the game for future female players.
Nana Ioseliani said: “Nona broke the first barrier, not just for Georgia, but for women around the world.”
Sofio Gvetadze – International Master, Woman Grandmaster, Secretary General of the Georgian Chess Federation and Chairperson of the Women’s Commission of Georgian Chess Federation – says Gaprindashvili had already popularised the sport by the time she began to move in these circles.
Sofio Gvetadze said: “When I started, it was both easy and difficult as these women had already achieved so much – so it was difficult to step into their shoes.”
Vera Kobalia, Co-Founder at disruptive commerce startup Olyn, Young Global Leader at WEF, 40 under 40, and former Minister of Economy of Georgia, said she couldn’t be prouder to be at Expo 2020, with the “best of the best from our country”.
Vera Kobalia said: “I’d like to extend our gratitude for the opportunity to deliver this extremely important message of empowerment for all women. We’ve come through a lot and we’ve worked hard to reach where we are today.”
Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Managing Director International Chess Federation (FIDE), said next year will be momentous for women in this field.
Dana Reizniece-Ozola said: “FIDE has announced 2022 as the year for women in chess. Women continuously need to expand the universe, to create new galaxies like a supernova, and to generate so much energy that the ceiling breaks. Leaders – especially female leaders – have to guide other women. We want to increase the quantity and the strengths of female players. They all need to be visible, not just the professional chess players, but the trainers, educators and organisers – all those ladies without whom the chess world would not be complete.
Ioseliani said: “Through chess children can learn critical thinking, the ability to analyse and the mechanisms to cope with everyday difficulties. Even if they don’t continue to play, they will be equipped with skills for life.”
Gaprindashvili said: “Don’t rely on the computers too much to train and to prepare you for matches. Practice on the board. Sit down at home, think about what your coach has said, move pieces around and then go back and ask questions.”
Leveraging chess as a great confidence booster for young women, Reizniece-Ozola said: “It’s important to highlight that women don’t have to make a choice between careers, education, sports, or motherhood. You can – and should – try to combine them all to succeed. We want to use chess for girl’s empowerment, and to harness them with vital life skills.”
{:}{:ar}دبي، 14 ديسمبر 2021 – نظّم مركز دبي للمعارض في إكسبو 2020 دبي يوم الاثنين جلسة نقاشية ضمت كبار معلمات لعبة الشطرنج في جورجيا، وقادتها نونا جابرينداشفيلي، أول امرأة تحصل على لقب “الأستاذ الكبير” في عام 1978، وبطولة العالم خمس مرات، والفائزة 11 مرة في أولمبياد الشطرنج العالمي، وهي أيضا الفائزة في فئة 65 عاما فما فوق في بطولة العالم لكبار السن في رومانيا عام 2019.
ويرجع الفضل إلى جابرينداشفيلي ومعاصريها في تمكين المرأة في هذه اللعبة، حيث خطى الشطرنج خطوات كبيرة مع وجود 37 امرأة فقط من بين أكثر من 1600 من أساتذة الشطرنج الدوليين. ولا يزال أمام هذه الرياضة، التي يهيمن عليها الرجال بشكل كبير، طريق طويل، بحضور نساء أخريات حطّمن الأرقام القياسية العالمية وأعدن تعريف اللعبة.
وقالت جابرينداشفيلي: “بدايتي في هذه اللعبة كانت من خلال اعتياد إخوتي الأربعة على ترتيب مباريات الشطرنج في منزلنا في مدينة زوغديدي في جورجيا؛ وعلى الرغم من أنني كنت الأصغر سنا، إلا أنهم كانوا دائما يضمّوني للعب معهم… كان أخي الأكبر أفضل لاعب شطرنج في بلدتنا، وتعلمت اللعب من خلال مشاهدته”.
وأضافت: “تعتبر لعبة الشطرنج، وخاصة الشطرنج للسيدات، جزءا من الثقافة الوطنية في جورجيا؛ فهذه اللعبة متجذرة بعمق في تقاليدها منذ القرن الحادي عشر. أيضا، يشمل مهر العروس رقعة شطرنج حتى يومنا هذا”.
أما عن نصيحة جابرينداشفيلي لمن يرغب في لعب الشطرنج، فتقول: “لا تعتمد على أجهزة الكمبيوتر كثيرا في التدريب والإعداد للمباريات، بل تدرّب على رقعة الشطرنج واجلس في المنزل، وفكر فيما قاله مدربك، وحرك القطع، ثم عد واطرح الأسئلة”.
وقالت نانا لوسيلياني، الفائزة مرتين ببطولة الشطرنج للسيدات: “كسرت نونا الحاجز الأول، ليس فقط بالنسبة لجورجيا، ولكن أيضا للنساء في أنحاء العالم؛ ويمكن للأطفال اليوم من خلال الشطرنج تعلُّم التفكير النقدي والقدرة على التحليل وآليات التعامل مع الصعوبات اليومية. حتى إذا لم يواصلوا اللعب، فسيكتسبون مهارات للحياة كلها”.
وتقول صوفيا جفيتادزا، المعلم الدولي والأمين العام لاتحاد الشطرنج الجورجي ورئيس لجنة المرأة في الاتحاد الجورجي للشطرنج، إن جابرينداشفيلي قد روجت للرياضة بالفعل، بحلول الوقت الذي بدأت فيه التحرك في هذا المجال؛ عندما بدأت كان الأمر بالنسبة لي سهلا وصعبا في آن واحد، لأن هؤلاء النسوة قد حققن الكثير بالفعل”.
في المقابل، قالت دانا ريزنيس أوزولا، العضو المنتدب للاتحاد الدولي للشطرنج (FIDE): “العام المقبل سيكون حدثا بالغ الأهمية للنساء في هذا المجال، حيث أعلن الاتحاد الدولي للشطرنج أن عام 2022 هو عام الشطرنج للسيدات؛ فيتعين على القادة، وخاصة القائدات، توجيه النساء الأخريات. نحن نريد زيادة عدد اللاعبات في هذا المجال وقدراتهن؛ وعلى الجميع أن يكون لهم ظهور واضح (في هذه اللعبة)، ليس فقط لاعبي الشطرنج المحترفين، ولكن المدربين والمعلمين والمنظمين، فكل هؤلاء السيدات بدونهن لن يكتمل عالم الشطرنج”.
وأكدت أوزولا أنه “لا يجب على النساء الاختيار ما بين التعليم والأمومة والرياضة، فهن قادرات على دمج كل تلك المهارات معا وفي وقت واحد، لذا نريد استخدام الشطرنج لتمكين الفتيات وتسليحهن بالمهارات الحياتية الحيوية والمهمة”.{:}
